Current treatments for depression and PTSD only suppress symptoms, if they work at all. What if we could prevent these diseases from developing altogether? Neuroscientist and TED Fellow Rebecca Brachman shares the story of her team's accidental discovery of a new class of drug that, for the first time ever, could prevent the negative effects of stress — and boost a person's ability to recover and grow. Learn how these resilience-enhancing drugs could change the way we treat mental illness.

  1. We don’t need newer better drugs, we need a newer better society.
I wholeheartedly recommend reading the book “Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression” on that subject.
Edit: I think I should have said – Better drugs are important, but more important is creating a society that eliminates the conditions that foster depression and PTDS.

I’d like to know if this drug they’re developing could bounce you back when you already have Major Depressive Disorder and PTSD

    • Don’t look for answers in drugs. Look within yourself. You can do it.

    • +karebu2 Kumbaya right outta here… Some people need meds, and your own case is no indication for all cases.
Every discussion about meds ends up with everybody and their sister giving these answers on what helped them.
“I was depressed, but then I started running and I’m all good now!”
“I was depressed, but then I went gluten free and now I’m cured!”
“I was depressed, but then I found Jesus!” etc…

Sounds like neuroleptics, which increase the reslilience

  4. What’s the name of this drug? What are the side effects documented so far? Is this an ad? Why is none of this mentioned?

    • +rem brandt hmm, but ketamin dont make me really happy, its just a weird drug…

    • She is describing a new class of drug: ketamine based molecules, or those that act in similar ways, not a specific drug. There has been considerable initial and clinical research in this field that shows promise, especially in certain populations. A “class” of drugs are those that act in a similar way, or use a similar pathway. This is a different class than, say, SSRIs, or any other depression medication available.
For some populations, this will be lifesaving. Initial research has shown it is effective even in those who have not found other classes of drugs to be helpful. Will it be for everyone, no. But for some it will be a miracle. That’s pretty much the way of most drugs.

    • +PPYes, I don’t like it either, it makes me kind of down … prefer Shrooms or mdma 😉

??…How can this be an ad if you don’t know the name? What would it be an ad for? Did she even mention human testing yet? It’s just in the animal testing phase. “None of this is mentioned” explicitly because it’s still a long way away from being relevant.

It’s ketamine. Here’s the original research paper:

  5. Ooh crap I tot she was Elizabeth Holmes

  6. overly numb people and a new class of drugs..weird

  7. We need better molecules like these. But we do have one already that does just this and is helping millions: ketamine.

  8. Shes talking about ketamine the iupac name of the resilence enhancer given is ketamine

Empathetic presentation aside, this entire “talk” is a sales pitch. No less a sales pitch than from a used cars salesperson.

  10. Was it just me or was that “resilience enhancer” ketamine? Sure looked like it

+NPC #76 Lets face it you don’t make money from healthy or dead people it’s bad for business.

    • +NPC #76 And you also need to understand that people who try to cure the world or do amazing things through science and research have also been discredited by their peers after a few backhanders or wind up dead & had their work stolen. So far in the US their has been over 5300 cases of siezed patents or had a secrecy order placed upon them. This isn’t about one guy arguing it’s me giving people the heads up as these things do exist . Rip Dr Sebi & Stanley Allen Meyer guys who tried to make the world a better place.

LSD or acid High concentrate of diggle’s but steady Pace throughout so whenever you get a jolt of depression it’s cloudy out with happiness

  15. Did u know guys that there was a drug against morning sickness that completely cured it?

Oh yeah wait I forgot to tell or research of it caused birth defects

  16. Excercise a LOT and everyday. Being lonely is the WORST. OMG..! LIFE its not easy for everyone. There is that kind of people who tells you “everything is in your head” and how little they know.

  17. It is called medicare for all. Gets rid of the stress too! Sure, you can always find a way to throw more money at a doctor or a rider specific to your need for that first class treatment you have always bought yourself,… but how about at a collective rate?
We all know the definition of insanity. The medical community businessmen and insurers have crashed the car for the last 20 years. Why would you throw them the keys one last time, let alone the last 15?

I am surprised that DARPA isn’t all over this research. PTSD and even just depression lower the effectiveness and durability of fighting forces. Being able to avoid PTSD would prevent early discharges and even disability for many soldiers, sailors, and marines. Since it would be military, they could even sidestep the DEA to start the research.
