How can we get people to do more good: to go to the polls, give to charity, conserve resources or just generally act better towards others? MIT research scientist Erez Yoeli shares a simple checklist for harnessing the power of reputations — or our collective desire to be seen as generous and kind instead of selfish — to motivate people to act in the interest of others. Learn more about how small changes to your approach to getting people to do good could yield surprising results.

No. One cannot be more equal, that makes no sense. What you are really trying to say is “worth” more or less. All men are equal but some men are worth more or less. Homeless people vs rich/famous people have different values and priorities by the government and the general public. Nobody cares if someone worthless suffers, but someone rich/famous, people make a big deal if their lives are well or not. For me my mom is worth more than your mom, but I would assume you would feel that your mom is worth more than my mom. So really are men are equal but some are worth more or less by the people and it’s government and to those who know them.

Most of the horrors of the world are done in the name of “doing good for others.”
Whether it is Communist revolutions “to help the poor”, but which ends up starving the poor to death, or charity itself – say to Africa – which means the people there do not bother investing in their land or learning self-reliance, as they know the idiot Westerners will give them free money and food for nothing, thus keeping Africa down.

  10. Sounds like “sales” ideas – he’s just selling them on “doing good” – but it’s still just sales.

Speaker was a little quiet, but the talk was simple, effective, and applicable to the audience. Good talk

  13. I believe that most people want to give, and share with others. But they want to do it on their own terms. This is why I forced taxation causes so many problems, but when he mentioned the Salvation Army, it reminded me of the donation buckets at the grocery store. Nobody likes being put on the spot, so having men standing by the door with bells is one thing, you can make the choice whether or not to give. But when you are at the counter and they are asking you to donate to a cause, that is putting people on the spot. Also people are very wary of where their money goes and which Charities are legitimate.

  14. A handbook for governments to legislate all morality. The CIA will give you life advice. They are always with you.

  15. How to motivate otherwise selfish people to serve others well??? One word …capitalism.
