What's up at SpaceX? Engineer Gwynne Shotwell was employee number seven at Elon Musk's pioneering aerospace company and is now its president. In conversation with TED curator Chris Anderson, she discusses SpaceX's race to put people into orbit and the organization's next big project, the BFR (ask her what it stands for). The new giant rocket is designed to take humanity to Mars — but it has another potential use: space travel for earthlings.

MUSK!!!
At 0:48 it sounds like she says “fucking heavy” instead of “falcon heavy”.
It just doesn’t much.
No
FOOKIN’ HEAVY
Big Fffffalcon Rocket :DD 12:07
* big fffuckin rocket
Lord Emperor Musk!!
Arhm. It’s god emperor*
Vineeth Gundlur
Lord empress Shotwell
They didn’t specified that you will be in one piece…
Nothing about you being in multiple pieces either.
We’re just pointing out things that weren’t mentioned right?
Elon found that delivering only 14.7% of your body at a time is far more efficient than the whole thing, up to 10 fold.
Spencer LOL I thought what I just wrote was sarcastic enough for John Doe,
but you went full on which he might take literally and will mos def trigger others.
well done tho
Ok, can you guys work together with Amazon and Alibaba now? I need one-day shipping available globally now.
It usually takes a day to get it to major hub distribution center, then launch it to orbit from there and then shoot it through your roof from orbit?
Why would Amazon work with SpaceX when Benzos owns Blue Origin?
The ‘Rocket Man’ title only belongs to Elon Musk. And the title ‘Rocket Lady’ belongs to Gwynne Shotwell.
Pio Lio Oh yeah, that is true. I will edit my comment.
The Rocket Man is James Harden
the “Rocket Lady” is Grimes 😉
Little Rocket Man Kim Jong-Un would disagree. Lol
Or Caitlin Jenner
Mostly it will be only the rich who will benefit from this government subsidized tech, unlike the research done by the likes of NASA. People shouldn’t be praising it just “because it’s cool”. Remember the world you live on.
godhead that is a pretty big load of b/s. The Tesla model 3 car is consumer oriented. Musk is funding research on batteries that will revolutionize renewable energy technology. His work on rockets has provided stimulus to the space sector. At least the latter two are advancing science. Certainly all three advance engineering. You’re welcome to provide examples that support your claims.Good luck with that!
I fail to understand your point about “… doing it all for profit.” My only response is _DUH_
Brenda Rua He would be phenomenally stupid if founded a rocket and car company for profit. If you want to make profit and have 100 millions to start with, don’t found a rocket and a car company.
This isn’t about Musk or evil profits or rocket technology.
Space-based transportation is just not going to be a reality for us who are not millionaires. So subsidized research is not giving any return in that particular application.
It’s not a controversial statement.
1ucasvb That I and many others disagree with you makes that a controversial statement by definition.
Max-Leo Amberg No, it just makes you overprotective of Musk and Space X.
Wait I thought the earth was flat
Reprogram Your Life haha, sorry about that
It is basically flat in small portions so yes.
rawstarmusic lame attempt at trolling
It is. It was filmed from above.
The cost and energy needed to escape the earths gravity would be prohibitive for everyday human transport and lets face the safety record on rockets…..I call BS on everyday travel. Space travel is a must for humanity and I applaud the efforts Musk is making on that front but we would need another form of propulsion to make regular travel around the world even remotely affordable to anyone but the insanely rich.
tktdwvandervelde the thing is thunderf00t is an idiot who makes videos to hate on musk, his hyperloop video at least is complete and total BS. Most of his points are completely made up with no connection to reality. He’s says mildly intelligent sounding things and people simply believe him..
The hyperloop critique was spot on…..Vacuum tubes with high speed projectiles are problematic at best and so far, after 6 years of development they have managed to get an electric car to travel on a rail in a tube…I see no evidence otherwise. This is openly admitted by those actively promoting the enterprise….and I see you provide no evidence to the country…so I find your comment asinine.
tktdwvandervelde I am all for sending them up there, because every twentieth rocket will explode on average. Good riddance!
tktdwvandervelde But the hyped idiots will never see it that way. For the same reasons people take up arms and go to war with cheers on their lips.
tktdwvandervelde These projects (rockets to Mars, rockets to Shanghai, Hyperloop) are basically big PR campaigns that funnel money into Elon Musks other projects, because hyped investors will buy all the Musk shares they can get their hands on.
Elon Musk should be the president of Earth.
of mars***
Being an insightful and imaginative genius is different than being politically fluent and an active president.
I think Gwynne (the subject of this video) would do a better job. Musk would be too constrained as President, and besides he’s not eligible as he was born in South Africa. Gwynne is US born, however!
South Africa is on Earth as well…
Historically, governments do the initial research, exploring, etc. They serve to prove the idea. NASA is a good example. Only after this work is done will investors make a commitment in a quest to make a profit. We are seeing this in action now. I think we would have seen it with Columbus and Drake, too. Both had support of kings and queens and their treasuries.
Brenda Rua You are absolutely correct. She made it sound like Space X discovered space exploration. The government created space exploration, and the internet, and this lady makes it sound like the private sector did, giving no credit to the US government. Sirry lady, but No!
Brenda Rua But what about muh capitalism & muh free markets.
ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Why not you ask the rockets magnify the problems that supersonic jets had and supersonic jets were not economically viable. And where did the hyperloop go did they just drop the project because simple maths actually showed that that would not work (source thunderfoot on youtube).
TheAnachronist the hyperloop was a failed project from the 1930s and it will fail again
Wesley vandeurzen The BFR will run on Methane and Liquid oxygen. SpaceX can in the future basically produce it for “free” using the Sabatier process to produce molecular oxygen and methane, and then liquefy it for long-term storage and use. The BFR will also be 100% reusable, like an airplane. Building the rocket will be expensive, like an airplane. But! When the rocket is made, flying it will be super cheap. In the long run it will be just as cheap is an airplane.
Wesley vandeurzen if you want to stay in the past, follow the skeptics blindly. If you want to live in the future, open your senses and start doing something about it. It is obvious where you stand. I’m skeptic too but I will always follow progression of an idea than say it can’t be done or even worst: I can’t figure it out so no one ever will or it must be god.
seriously, look at you. ”this wont happend” ”listen to me the hyperloop will faill”
So what, if it fail it will fail, with or without your unstopable and useless rant. If it succeed everyone will have a new way to move around.
If this SpaceX project fail, we will still have an amazing roquet that can send us to Mars and the moon.
IF Space X project succeed everyone will be happy with a new, ”non-polluting” (less polluting, you still have to make the roquet) mode of transportation.
Everybody who ever said something was impossible & not viable was eventually proven wrong.
Lunch out in Japan anyone?
Hoe delivery from Japan is cheaper. Online order the chef and wait half an hour.
$2000 sushi, no thanks!
Bullshit. How long will the whole time take? When you are at airport you have to arrive at airport which takes time. Same thing for getting to the rocketport except unlike the airport the rocketport is going to be in the middle of nowhere for safety reasons. What about security screening, even more time added. Sure the actual travel time of the rocket is minutes but you won’t be flying to Japan for lunch unless you start at 6 a.m. And that’s only if you could get the safety in line with jet travel.
Overonator she even said the travel to the island will be longer than the travel around the globe, and compared to classic airflights you will still save yourself so many hours.
Yeah, it’s not viable for short range trips. But for near antipodal flights that take sixteen hours, it is definitely a viable option as long as it can be made safe.
Overonator Electric quad-copters. Many companies are working on them.
Well the same applies for planes. You’re not saying anything new. Would you want to use a plane flight time that takes 10hr+ or 30 min flight time with spacex? Everything else is basically the same.
+Free thinker
Electric aircraft are one of the coolest developments in near term transportation, but I view them more as an option for short range flights like Paris to London. And more VTOL/STOL fixed wing aircraft than quadcopters, because pure rotary wing aircraft are not very efficient per distance travelled.
This episode was Shotwell!
nice…
now thats a smart comment NQ 🙂
Sleepful in Shotwell.
We choose to go to Mars. We choose to go to Mars in next decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.
I am with you but mars launches are going to happen in the 2030s.
Earth and Mars are in a terrible Constellation before.
She is awesome.. no wonder they do so good…if Elon gathered a team of such amazing persons…they can literally achieve everything they planed on.
Seems like an ordinary woman to me. What is it you like?
