Why The US Dietary Guidelines Don’t Apply to 90% Of Americans And How They Can

The dietary guidelines laid out by the government are conflicting with good health in so many ways. For one, they are recommendations that would only work for someone who is already healthy, yet close to 90% of our population in the US is metabolically unhealthy. They also don’t take ethnicity and socioeconomic status into account, among many other factors. This is a big issue. Clearly, we should be providing Americans with guidelines that will actually serve their health. And research shows that whether we like it or not, as a society we’ve followed the guidelines over several decades and suffered the consequences with worsening health.

Today’s guest has been a huge inspiration to me, as she’s challenged the conventional wisdom on nutrition and continues to expose the truth behind our guidelines and the food industry. Nina Teicholz is a science journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller, The Big Fat Surprise, which upended the conventional wisdom on dietary fat—especially saturated fat—and spurred a new conversation about whether these fats in fact cause heart disease. Named a Best Book of the Year by the Economist, Wall Street Journal, and Mother Jones, among others, it continues to be called a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the amazing story of how we came to believe fat is bad for our health—and what a better diet might look like.

14 Comments on Why The US Dietary Guidelines Don’t Apply to 90% Of Americans And How They Can

  1. USDA dietary guidelines released in 1977…obesity went from thru the roof. Coincidence? Bigfood bigPharma and gov are all in cahoots. Bigfood makes you sick, bigPharma gives you drugs to cover up the symptoms, doctors in the middle, politicians get lobby money. Vicious circle! Humans are the sickest ever in history.

  2. Why would healthy Americans follow the guidelines? Wouldn’t that make them overweight? I don’t understand why doctor Hyman keeps saying that. I will continue to follow a low carb whole foods diet…

    • It’s mostly because healthy people follow the guides that are in magazines, subscriptions, nutritionist etc. which all is written in line with the guidelines.

  3. Can you explain why the longest lived people in the blues zones do Not eat tons of saturated fat? I believe in eating ALL whole foods in moderation and that includes saturated fat, but just because a small amount is OK does not mean it’s OK to eat as much as you want! When it comes to eating, many people believe what they Want to believe and if you research enough, you Will find articles that say exactly what you want them to say. And that includes if you want to be a vegetarian, vegan, eat all meat, or tons of fat. You can always find the so called ‘research’ that will say exactly what you want to hear. The truth is we need to eat a sensible amount of vegetables, beans, starches, and meat. The people that eat this way ARE the healthiest and live the longest! It’s ridiculous to think eating all meat, all vegetables, or tons of fat is OK.

  4. After reading through the comments, it seems several people have the wrong idea about what’s being said here. This is not a “Keto analysis/discussion” video. This is primarily a discussion of the governmental diet recommendations/guidelines for the health of its’ citizens in the United States of America. The focus is on the blanket application of their guidelines, how the guidelines were formulated, what has been ignored, and why said guidelines fall short of eliciting the results people think that they will if applied.

This is not about people in Okinawa, Sardinia, or any other land.

  5. The globalists in the World Economic Forum have proposed in their “Great Reset” for 2021 that we will all be vegan and eat animal products “only occasionally”. With all that money behind them, it’s not surprising that it’s difficult for the dietary guidelines committee to change their story. There’s great opposition to the truth. They want only 500 million population worldwide, so many deaths is what they want.

  6. Nina is such a wonderful guest, and wish there was more folks like her globally advocating governments like she does. ts frustrating to hear of the barriers put up to valid trials by the committee on dietary guidelines. Have to wonder if its all about the $$$ and not just habit/ bias/ cynicism/ incompetence.
