How The FOOD YOU EAT Leads To MASSIVE FATIGUE & MALNUTRITION | Mark Hyman

The sad reality is that Americans suffer from massive nutritional deficiencies and our food is primarily to blame. These nutrient deficiencies are showing up in underweight and overweight people alike. Aside from a reduction in nutrient density in our food, we don’t eat enough whole, unprocessed foods and instead have diets rich in refined sugars and starches. And even when we are eating the right foods, our bodies sometimes have trouble digesting and absorbing the necessary nutrients from those foods. Simply put, low nutritional status equals a poorly functioning metabolism.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the issue of malnutrition and what that means for our overall health. They dive into how they diagnose and treat the most prevalent nutrient and vitamin deficiencies and Dr. Boham shares cases of patients she has treated who have difficulty putting on and maintaining weight.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

    • It takes time to adjust . In the beginning having sea salt and creatine supplement helps . Recently , I am eating one avocado daily but I split it between my two meals .

  1. Hello Dr Mark, how about a interview with Eric Bakker Naturopath from New Zealand on Candida/good bacteria. He has an excellent y t chan and book.

  2. Dr.Hyman, I am following you for more than five years, and you are amazing and true person, and I want to add something which is mind health, mind and body are two sides of coin, both needs to be healthy, if one lack other can’t function to ultimate, so over thinking, wrong time of sleep, and mindset are some of the factor also need to be look at,
This are just my personal thoughts, I am not a doctor or expert so please accept my apologies if I am talking to off subject.
Thank again for your efforts to the world.

  3. What kinds of tests can I take to find out what kinds of nutritional deficiencies I have? Can I take a test to find out what my nutritional status is? I live in California.

  4. Hi, I have gilbert Syndrome and I have a hard time gaining weight. I really have a hard time trying to know what to eat that doesn’t affect my bilirubin levels and also helps me gain weight. Thanks

  5. You are preaching to the choir. We are following latest scientific findings on food, how they are converted etc. Nitric oxide and it’s role would be great.

  6. I agree with everything, but the affordability on one little income for 6 people, and now with inflation is overwhelmingly difficult. We already spend enough needing to be gluten free to keep my son safe. We do atleast grow a garden, raise chickens for meat and eggs, and harvest deer, but the extras are difficult on a small budget.

  7. THE FARMING OF THE FOOD OVERALL NEEDS TO CHANGE!!!!!!!! ESPECIALLY IF THE POWERS THAT BE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE. THANK YOU DOCTOR! GOOD FARMING PRACTICES ARE OVER LOOKED AND UNDERVALUED!!!

  8. My husband and I have spent si much money with a naturopath on the health of our two sons struggling with chronic pain with no relief after 6 months. I’d give anything to have them seen by your practice. Do you offer any grants?

  9. Two people who more than likely have disposable income, based on the Apple products in their ears, talking about malnutrition. Give me a break. I want to see them live on a nutrient rich diet with an average Social Security Income and be able to afford all the other things needed to live. These people need to shut up because they know there is nothing they intend to really do. I suspect that Medicare and Medicaid patient aren’t even excepted at their clinics.
