SUMMARY:
——————–
To my continual surprise, most people don’t have a real grasp on how vital their friendships are to their overall mental health and happiness. In study after study, researchers from a variety of disciplines continually find that the quality of our immediate friendship-based relationships is one of the most important factors in determining our overall stability, mood, ambition, emotional range, growth, and satisfaction in life.
In our friendships, it’s useful to heed this warning: Be careful whom you surround yourself with. while that counsel seems like kitchen-table wisdom, you’d be surprised by who most people invite to their tables of friendship. You’d also be surprised how many people barely invite anyone to their tables. The average American has only one or two close friends. That’s unfortunate, but it does give us a ready clue to how they can immediately increase their life satisfaction.
Here, I share 3 types of friends:
Old Friends, who you had a great connection with once but you no longer need to feel guilty about not hanging out with. You had your time together in a specific part of your life – honor it but let it go.
Maintenance Friends, who you keep in touch with once or a few times per year just to "maintain" the connection. Set these folks up on reminders in your calendar but don't feel so bad you don't connect more.
Growth Friends, who you will continually deepen relationships with today and in the future – these are great friends you want more time and adventure with. FOCUS HERE!

Your videos have definitely gave me the encouragement I needed.
Thanks a lot for the video. Very helpful. Unfortunately these days it’s difficult to find growth friends. If you have one or two, hold on to them.
+migane aden farah How about no?
I have no friends at all lmfao
I’m sure there are many people who do not have growth friends. I am one of them. Some just won’t admit it.
+Raion Unbound That is why I decided to include Brendon Burchard in my social circle 😉 Even though I am not in his… 😛 but hey I’m going to spend my new years watching his videos. Counts as a growth friend, right? 😀
I have exactly the same mindset 😉
One thing is for sure, it is not the end of the world if you don’t have friends. If you are OK with no friends, then it’s OK and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. If you want to have friends, maybe you are just going thru a period of ‘no friends’ in your life which is going to end soon.
Quality friendships are excellent for a happy life. Keeps that balance in your life. I’m trying to do better with my maintenance friends and I want to make sure my growth friends don’t turn into maintenance friends.
dun watch this man’s video before going to bed, you will get motivated instantly and will lose the sleep LOL… but i never missed to watch his videos ..he’s like a mentor for me…awesome Brendon…
I needed this! As I move in to a new chapter in my life focusing on personal growth and my passion I realize how many people around me aren’t on my level. I have found happiness within myself and love spending time alone. I believe new friends will manifest when they are available to me without feeling like I had to go out and find them.
+Brandon Whistler I feel exactly the same. I would rather be alone than with someone who is negative.
+Brandon Whistler u r right, having n maintaining friends need time… and wont really have too much time to go look for friends… besides even among all the friends that i had – are not happy once they see that am starting to succeed. 🙁 am better beingalone.
I feel exactly the same!!
Literally when i was thinking about this topic! Wow thanks a lot Brendon
Hello Brendon! Thank you for enlighten my days, I truly appreciated everything you do, you continue giving me new perspectives on all the ways and different topics, and that to me is a truly bless! cause I get to learn so much from you and your media circlesI love the way you delivered your message and the most valuable thing for me, is that you put into simple and clear words to understand, the hidden feelings and emotions, that overwhelm me from time to time and now I release them and set me free, that is such an incredible feeling!I keep my faith on humankind because of people like you in my days, lets continue getting the best of the world were we canStill looking for my way to meet you some day, hopefully soon! <3
My big problem is to make some new friends that are “Growth” friends that can motivate me to grow and have similar interest my old/actual friends are not in to this i love them but they are kind of idiots/lazy and it seems my big problem is where to find similar people i live in a small 150k city thats part of the problem …
What happens when someone considers you one of their growth friends (because they find you funny or learn from you) but they do not add to your growth? They do not bring anything to the party?
I feel I may only have one growth friend in my life. and I rarely get to see her. Perhaps a few times a year now. How can I cope with that when the rest of my other “friends” may not be growth friends? How do I get/make another one?
As I change and grow, I realize I need people more aligned with who I am becoming. Obviously that causes a conflict with my old friends as they seem to stay pretty much in their lane (stagnate) they’ve settled into who they are, and are very comfortable. And that’s perfectly fine, I’m not judging. But for me personally, I have to continue to grow, I have to continue to press on and achieve more. Now the big thing in my life is that is happening with my girlfriend. And that’s where my guilt is par se, I’m trying to get her aligned with me but it’s proving to be taxing.
After i watched this video, I realised that some of my best growth friends become maintenance friends due to being in different areas, different career paths and livestyles : it’s sad but I guess that’s how life is… and I also realised I have one and only growth friend left lol
I need some more growth friends. Its really amazing how you described the growth friends thats exactly how they are. I do need to work on maintain my friendship with them even if they’re busy.
u still can if you were close friends with them, if not that makes sense.
i did. they couldn’t have cared less. however now i’ve got a ‘growth’ friend , although i’m not even that important for him it has been 2 years.
I get what you’re saying people grow up and change ive been there as well. Have you tried getting in contact with him?
It’s so interesting seeing all of the comments below – I feel exactly the same. I think when you are in your 30’s or 40’s, sadly often it’s hard to find people who are fired up about their personal growth. I know a couple of my friends are either bored or think I’m a bit weird when I talk about this stuff. I am soon going to start a learning program to become a personal growth coach. I’m hoping I meet some like-minded people there who become true friends.
Be around people who have similar virtues as you. Everything else will fall in place
It really made me understand , more then a year and a half asking my self
I have a few friends and I don’t really enjoy socializing in general. I would much rather be alone. If I could crawl into a hole and stay there for the rest of my life, I would.
it saddened me how this video made me realize I have no growth friends or best friends. is it normal to cry over it? I mean ever since grade school I am with my family, no boyfriend, or anyone I am fond of. i have old friends but fascinating cause they are more than my maintenance friends. I could though think of one growth friend but it seemed like I am not one of her growth friends. Anyway, thanks so much for this!!! I’d keep watching out for more of your vids.
Nat Farenas aww.. I know how you feel.
Karen Ocampo is it sad or not? i totally could not sort out my feelings right.
well for me it is really upsetting and frustrating but what can I do? I can’t force people to like me or to stick with me.. So I keep telling myself that it’s okay to be by yourself it just makes you stronger. And if my main focus is to better myself, maybe one day, just maybe, those right people will come to me. This is life, so we just gotta deal with what it brings us.
Finding a growth friend… Earlier or later I really have to get that achieved somehow. Thank you for all the videos Brendon! They help many people to understand their minds more!
