Simply, if we can observe correctly, we know this over time to be true. Socrates was eluding to this – I believe, in Plato’s The Republic.

This is, on a little inspection – almost self explanatory. But only perhaps to the analytically minded folk here on earth. Criminal insanity does not and could not see this as a truism or any axiom of self worth, ethics etc.
