A Simple Diet Experiment That May Solve Most Of Your Health Issues

Symptoms like bloating, brain fog, poor sleep, poor digestion, skin rashes, mood issues, hormonal issues, joint pain, and many, many others can all be caused by food sensitivities. Food sensitivities might affect you immediately or it might take a few days. This can make it difficult to determine what foods might be causing various problems. Eliminating specific trigger foods such as gluten, dairy, grains, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine for a duration of time is a way for your body to hit the reset button on your health. After following an elimination diet for a certain period of time, you can then strategically add foods back in to see how you tolerate them.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Lisa Dreher to discuss how they use elimination diets to identify and treat food sensitivities in their patients.

Lisa is a registered dietitian who got her undergraduate nutrition degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed a dietetic internship through Cornell University. Lisa first worked in the acute care hospital setting and became a Clinical Nutrition Specialist working in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. At the same time, she pursued her Masters degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and started practicing integrative and functional nutrition in private practice before joining UWC in 2015. She has since received additional training through the Institute for Functional Medicine.

Over the past 10 years, Lisa has delivered several public health lectures on the role of food as medicine and her work has been showcased in Reader’s Digest, on National Public Radio, and she was featured in the Broken Brain 2 series. She also developed the Digestive Health and Gut Microbiome training module for the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine practice group through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

  1. Great episode, I am trying to heal my brain from a concussion. 3 1/2 years with drs only amounted to countless meds & being told I was depressed. Over 20 years I was primarily vegetarian with small amounts of fish & chicken. When I had bad reactions to the medication I was told to eat more oatmeal, fruits & veggies so I tried the vegan diet for 30 days. It didn’t go well at all, I ended up trying keto which worked well initially. I kept researching and heard about carnivore diet which scared me as I always heard red meat & saturated fats were the worst for you & I always listened. I felt I had nothing to lose and tried carnivore for 30 days. It’s been 4 1/2 mos and I feel better physically than I really ever remember which includes dental improvements! Best of all my brain has calmed down, there’s a mental clarity I haven’t experienced since 2016. I tried adding a few veggies (2 pieces of lettuce) and was bloated for 1/2 the day. Always hearing how necessary fruits/veggies are what does someone like me do when only meat is working. I don’t want to miss key nutrients.

    • Great to know, Im seriously considering starting the carnivore diet since it is the Ultimate elimination diet. I landed here because although I’ve ready many people feel completely amazing doing it, I’d also like to eat fruits and spices and have some sort of normal eating habits. Definitely not the SAD, but I cannot say no to a fresh grapefruit in the middle of the summer, so yeah very interested in how to reintroduce foods after some months on the carnivore diet. @Angela Greene, have you tried any other reintroductions?

    • Monica Martinez It’s obvious Dr Hyman has ADHD and cannot stop interrupting. I don’t think he is trying to be rude, but interrupting is something he can’t control. Interrupting is one of many signs of ADHD

    • I agree, it can get annoying, but I think it’s his way of keeping the interaction interesting as a dialogue, instead of a monologue.
Also, I think he’s trying to highlight some key points of the guest’s message.

  2. Dr.Hyman invites speakers then he talks over them – he has been doing that whenever I want to hear his podcast . And I am not the first who notice that ! What’s the point to bring this guests?

  3. I’m a mma fighter in New England and I was already super healthy and fit compared to the average person but when I started doing things you recommended I realized I was carrying around like 5-10 lbs of extra weight via inflammation. Once I started adding more fats and fiber (via avocados, seeds, etc) and eliminating bad carbs (bread etc) I literally dropped an entire weightclass. Now instead of walking around at 160ish and cutting to 145 i walk around at 150ish and can cut down to 135 and have way less “FLC” when doing it.

  4. Fabulous conversation!! All I say is Whole Foods. I am 65 year old lady. My life was full of migraines, until I start removing food out of my daily life. That was 20 years ago. It’s so hard to heal by changing habits & know whole food heals gut.
    Thanks for this podcast!!!

  5. Have Hashimoto’s + 2 other autoimmune issues. I always appreciate these interviews and chats to educate myself more about autoimmune and healing. Been on the elimination diet for 3 months and still have gas, bloating, IBS, etc. Sadly functional doctors and doctors that are the most helpful are not covered by insurance so I feel like I’m on my own to try and feel better. At least with youtube this information has gotten easier to access which is great.

  6. I’m not sure why people here get so upset about Mark’s “interruptions” because he is simply interjecting to further clarify, expound, or illuminate key points that the guest speakers make. If you notice, guests generally nod and/or agree with him enthusiastically and aren’t annoyed.

  7. Guess before watching: Elimination diet!
Also HOW is Mark STILL interrupting when most of his comments are asking him to please stop lol geez??

  8. Love this topic. I’m currently doing the elimination diet for my RA. It’s encouraging to know that some healthy foods that I love may be acceptable in the future 🙂
