Using the lens of Functional Medicine, we know we can’t blame just one part of the body for disease or dysfunction. The same goes for agriculture and climate change. We can’t just blame cows and call it a day. It’s a complex issue that deserves a comprehensive plan of action. Regenerative agriculture recognizes the essential role of grazing animals in an ecosystem to create stronger soils, healthier crops, and produce better meat. On today’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Nicolette Hahn Niman to explore where we’ve gone wrong when it comes to raising meat, some of the biggest areas to focus on for a positive climate impact, and so much more. As a vegetarian rancher for almost two decades who now eats meat, she offers a unique perspective on raising and eating animals.

Nicolette Hahn Niman is a writer, attorney, and livestock rancher. She authored the books Defending Beef (2014, and second ed. 2021) and Righteous Porkchop (2009), as well as numerous essays for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Los Angeles Times. She has also written for The Atlantic, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Earth Island Journal, among others. Nicolette has appeared on The PBS Newshour, The Dr. Oz Show, and in numerous films and documentaries, including Eating Animals and Sustainable. Previously, she was the Senior Attorney for the environmental organization Waterkeeper, where she focused on agriculture and food production; before that, she was an environmental lawyer for National Wildlife Federation. Today, she lives in Northern California with her two sons, and her husband, Bill Niman, founder of the natural meat companies Niman Ranch and BN Ranch.

This is my recent video with Dr Campbell McBride. I explored both sides of the debate for many years and I was a vegetarian for a while many years ago. I accept that some people appear to get on without meat or animal products, but in my experience they are in the minority. There are many athletes who thrive on a carnivore diet. We are all different and shouldn’t adopt a one size fits all approach. I’m glad that you’re in good health. Long may it continue!

    • @Norman VanChristoph I need help coz I have compassion for others? Do you mean like a human being! What are you, an alien? If not, it’s you who needs the help as you sound like a psychopath! Good luck

    • @Teapotpixie there is no debate, you’re either consistently for oppression or you’re against it, or you’re a hypocrite! The vegetarian diet is even more cruel to the animal so glad to hear you don’t do that anymore! If they’re in the minority, can you explain why vegan athletes are competing and beating their non vegan competitors if they’re not thriving and only make up 1% of the competition? This is not a fluke, hence veganism is the fastest growing social justice movement going! The difference with the carnivore athletes is that their blood work shows a very different story and a bad outcome. No innocent infant (which they are) should be harmed for your gain, that’s the most human supremacist thing you can do! We’re meant to be an intelligent civilisation and do better, not abuse our power! That’s disgraceful! If you could live your life without harming anyone then why wouldn’t you!

  1. My grandfather harvested the crops and then the cows grazed after and the manure fertilized the soil. Meat is what people ate all the time because crops were not grown year around. Until grocery stores, you couldn’t buy vegetables all year. Vegetables are good but for detox but you can’t get all the nutrients, the problem is all the carbs because people never ate that much.

  2. Wonderful!

  3. She talks about electric cars but how many have asked how they get the electricity to charge them, it comes from natural gas. The max mileage is about 148 miles, and then what are they going to do if you run out of juice on the highway? In Texas last year they tried going green and shut the plant down, the blades froze up, and ice and snow on solar panels, and there goes your juice. It sounds good on the surface but not much thought has gone into it.

    • @David Mangold you shouldn’t need authority to be moral! Nothing ignorant about it, what’s ignorant is that you still think it’s justified to live like a caveman! I think you’ll find the only ones getting bullied and worse are the animals! Was your comment meant to be ironic?

    • @ET Himself nah, I’m hear to speak the truth! I’m very open minded, hence I’m informed and vegan, so maybe you were referring to yourself.

  4. We have a serious problem that started with the scientific revolution and Francis Bacon. Before the scientific revolution we practiced deductive reasoning linked to Aristotle. Our problems won’t be resolved using inductive reasoning but getting to objective truth. Corporations can only evolve using inductive reasoning

  5. Dr. Hyman:: …..”when we eat protein, it doesn’t really spike the insulin that much”….. Wow! This used to be generally accepted as a given. Recently, this has become severely questioned !!!!!!!!!

    • I think some people are more careful with protein in terms of trying to lose weight when they have pretty bad insulin resistance (IR) , which results in a higher insulin spike when eating protein or carbs compared to someone who doesn’t have that great level of IR. But generally speaking, protein shouldn’t spike insulin as much as carbs does, of course.
