This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sat down for a deep talk with poet IN-Q. We talked about the power of nature, and how nature always offers an open invitation for us to step into the present moment and to be present with ourselves.
In our conversation, I shared that after finishing college, I grabbed my backpack, filled it up with a week’s worth of food, and went hiking in the Shenandoah Valley to figure out what I wanted out of life. This is how I discovered I wanted to be a doctor.

So glad that you did that!! A great model for the rest of us
Wow, that’s beautiful! Thank you for sharing this and all of your other work, Dr. Hyman. I would love to hear more of your personal stories. We learn so much from sharing and reflecting upon each other’s stories. ‘Are stories are our theories’!!! 🙂
Many notable people who have made profound contributions to humanity’s knowledge, have cited that they spent long periods of time alone, walking in nature. During those times, they were able to engage their holistic beings, intuition, and intellectual potential in ways that we may not do when we are either in constant communication with others, or indoors. I encourage everyone to spend time alone and in nature, to simply tune in and think, organically, peacefully, and with the intention of helping yourself and others.
