Supplements: Useful Or Useless?

Even with a perfect diet, the combination of many things—including our depleted soils, the storage and transportation of our food, genetic alterations of traditional heirloom species, and the increased stress and nutritional demands resulting from a toxic environment—make it impossible for us to get all the vitamins and minerals we need solely from the foods we eat. And large-scale deficiencies of nutrients in our population—including omega-3 fats, vitamin D, folate, zinc, magnesium, and iron—have been well documented. So what do we need to know when it comes to combating these deficiencies with supplementation?⁣
⁣
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss common nutrient deficiencies and what you need to know about determining what supplements are best for you.⁣

27 Comments on Supplements: Useful Or Useless?

  1. No one is going to say it’s hooey if they have enough courage to try supplements themselve. Food is not enough nowadays.

  2. Thank you guys it is a wander full and important information. I have received a bad guts by doctors mistakenly poke my intestines five places about 26 years I still suffering from bad digestive issues but about 2 years ago I started taking 2 lemon fresh squeezed empty stomach and one at evening time now I am doing 80 percent better. What I want to know were I can get good B vitamins thanks

  3. Ketones diet is the best we are in our mid eighties we started our 2 year ago we are doing great walking playing golf.as old we are we had going pee a lot we started talking nano colloidal silver daily and our bladder improves 100 percent

    • You can start with a good multivitamin first for a few months. Then depending on your health, beauty, energy & longevity requirements, add the additional supplements. Every body is different.
And you get better results when you are doing IF & LCHF.

  4. Dr’s, Im going to try magnesium threponate for my neuropathy in my feet. Mg citrate did work almost immediately for restless leg syndrome but not for neuropathy. So far nothing works for neuropathy. Maybe collagen?

    • Your neuropathy could be your hips/back being out alignment. Or that your metatarsals are shot and having less fat on the balls of your feet. I had neuropathy and it wasn’t until I got the appropriate orthotics (I had them made on site by an orthotist) that my neuropathy went away. It was my osteopath who told me that I needed to get them. Went away first day I had them

  5. Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Mark Hyman thank you for sharing your knowledge of vitamins and nutrition.
I really enjoyed how you both put this information together. JP

  6. With modern chemical agriculture & soil nutrient depletion, supplement is a Must for our body overall biochemistry functions. A basic Multivitamin is a good start & a further additional of certain vitamins minerals for different body requirements. And take in consideration level of health, beauty, energy & longevity.
From my experience now, with Intermittent Fasting & Low Carbohydrate High Fats, my supplement nutrients work much more better! I can see it & I can feel it ..

  7. My husband and I both take specific supplements. We work with a Functional Medicine Physciain and the key to what we do is TESTING!!! We ONLY take the supplement that out blood labs show that is needed and ONLY Professional supplements like Metagenics etc. We ALSO focus on organic and GMP free foods as well. But as we age we often no longer absorb the nutrients we take every day. The take away? Get tested…and work with a highly trained individual.

  8. Basically this was a 42 minute advertisement for the Ultrawellness Center. “We test for…”, “We use…”, and on and on and on. Through watching the entire video I learned that I should go to the Ultrawellenss Center if I live near Lenox, MA. As I do not live anywhere near Lenox, MA, I learned virtually nothing by watching this video. I did learn that magnesium glycinate is absorbed better by the body than magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate, which are the more common form of magnesium supplements and are the form in the supplements I am currently taking. Oh, and they did restate that your body pees out any extra Vitamin B-12, but I already knew that. Essentially, just read what I wrote and skip the video, but if you do live near Lenox, then DEFINITELY go get your blood tested and they can REALLY help determine exactly which supplements are best for you.

  9. What types of High Blood Pressure Medications depletes us of Magnesium? I’m taking Losartan, amlodipine & Nebivolol. Do these depletes me of Magnesium?

  10. Great info. Please stop interrupting your amazing guests so much. You are awesome Dr. Hyman and so are your guests.

  11. Hi, what are the best brand of vitamins available to the public? Online ordering or sold in store. Thank you! Love your channel

  12. Magnesium citrate kills candida, dissolves oxalates, and decalcifies the pineal gland. I have histamine intolerance so I use it only occasionally, but my kids take it every night.
