By now, most of us are familiar with post-COVID syndrome, also called long haulers syndrome, in which a patient who has had COVID-19 experiences long-lasting symptoms. While medicine is still trying to fully understand the reason why a percentage of COVID-19 patients go on to also experience post-COVID syndrome, there appear to be parallels to chronic fatigue syndrome experienced from the Epstein-Barr virus. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Patrick Hanaway about using a Functional Medicine approach to treat post-COVID syndrome. He also speaks with Dr. Matt Cook about several cutting-edge therapies he is using to treat his patients with post-COVID syndrome.
Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician trained at Washington University. After 10 years as Chief Medical Officer at Genova Diagnostics, Dr. Hanaway became the Chief Medical Education Officer for the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2014, Dr. Hanaway was the founding Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. His research focus is on nutrition, the microbiome, and evaluating value in Functional Medicine models of care. Currently, his teaching focus is on cancer, COVID, and uncertainty.
Dr. Hanaway was initiated in 2009 as a Mara’akame (Indigenous healer) by the Huichol people of the Sierra Madres in Mexico. He holds community fires, leads ceremonies, and offers traditional healing sessions. This part of his practice provides some much-welcome spiritual and emotional insight into addressing our imbalances as a nation.
Dr. Matthew Cook is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has completed a fellowship in Functional Medicine. His practice, BioReset™ Medical, provides treatments for conditions ranging from pain and complex illness to anti-aging and wellness. At BioReset™ Medical, Dr. Cook treats some of the most challenging to diagnose and difficult to live with ailments that people suffer from today, including Lyme disease, chronic pain, PTSD, and mycotoxin illness. His approach is to use the most non-invasive, natural, and integrative ways possible.
Regarding the current pandemic, Dr. Cook has spent the past several months distilling the latest research, talking with experts around the world, and integrating his vast clinical experience to provide up-to-date information to the public and medical practitioners.

I can’t get help from my doctors about the mitochondria and checking my gut health . I changed doctors and still nothing. I became really ill last October just following what I can from Dr Mark Hyman’s posts. I’ve taken care of a few things and feel way better than I did. But I just know there’s something going on. Do you have any suggestions on how and what are the proper things to ask for for my doctor?
ask your doctor for Candida, H pylori tests.. often when the immune system is weakned, other bacteria take this as an opportunity to populate the gut. Also a couple of supplements like (Vitamin D,C, magnesium,NAC, other produtcs to support your adrenals, a good probiotics.. i highly recommend you read the book “From fatigued to fantastic!
Book by Jacob Teitelbaum” he details a specfic protocol for post viral conditions.it’s called the SHINE protocl ” S= Sleep / H= Hormones /I :infections /N= Nutrition / E: Exercise. you will get a good grasp on areas to improve, what kind of help you will need from your doctor.. i hope these helps i’m just sharing what i have learned so far from this illness ,Be safe.
@JordyW ty I will do that
Dr. Mark Hyman a functional medicine practitioner. You can find other FM doctors on ifm.org
upper right corner “find a practitioner”
@Andy Spark oh my goodness thank you so much going to check into it right now!
honey from new zealand
These post viral disorders can often be neuroplasticity gone wrong. The initial virus has been defeated, but the autonomic nervous system gets stuck in the emergency response mode, so the body continues to behave as if it’s sick. It’s neurological, which is why it can affect every system in the body. There are neuroplasticity based approaches that address this.
you are on point with this, i have been sick for 13 month, things started going right for me only after i started a neuro plasticity program, i’m still not recovered but i’m gaining control on a daily basis 🙂
@JordyW May I ask what program you are doing?
@chandelie4 it’s called ANS Rewire, it has a more wholesome approcha that i dentify with, it deals with diet, exercise as well as the core strategy “Brain Retraining” but there’s others ones, DNRS, GUPTA.. to name a few , i hope this helps
@JordyW Does it requires Doctor’s referral or how’s it covered or get this treatment plan?
@Layla P i don’t think assurance companies cover this, And docotrs don’t prerscribe it to their patients at least mine didn’t ,i came across it doing my own research, .. you need no referral ,just to buy the course online and like follow the material .Basically it’s an educational program that help you retrain your brain which’s stuck on Fight or flight response and causing your autonomous nervous
system to go out of whack. so the material is basically lectures,CD and tools to help you re-balance this part of your brain. i hope i answered your question 🙂
I thought maybe I’d get a reply with some advice or perhaps my story would have been interesting to health practitioners, a little shocked my comment was removed
I think the channel owner specifies which things trigger comments being removed into their spam folder. Links and references to other channels are common triggers. If you want to try again, try posting your story a paragraph at a time, maybe as answers to your post to keep them in order.
Just checking If word covid is censored by YouTube
Still visible after 3h. To be careful i write it in capital letters and replace “O” with “zero” and “I” with small “L”.
But i have other issues. My comments disappear, if they are too long.
Watching this before it gets censored by youtube overlords.
Pretty sad that talking about is “controversial”
@snowmanmike It even sadder that a private tech company decides what doctors should say about a disease on their platform. Youtube became a monopoly on video services, I wish there are alternatives for youtube.
How can I find a practitioner who will prescribe peptides for my 15 year old son with Lyme?
More “covid” NONSENSE. SHAME!
Where did the term long hauler come from???
Dr. Hyman could you interview Beth McDougall, M.D. on this topic?
She has interesting experiences with her patients too.
“Long haul” Epstein Barre is usually an autoimmune problem and usually easily remedied. If Covid “long haul” is similar to Epstein Barre I suggest it might respond to my protocols in dealing with autoimmune disease.
some of the stuff he said about myocondrial support etc are bs… he doesn’t even know what hes rambling about..
Ivermectin does it all. Save your breath
