Why would a person who’s never had allergy or sensitivity to any food or drink, suddenly become allergic to Brazil Nuts (sadly)?? This happened to me a few months ago. Very disappointed as Brazil nuts were a firm favourite..
Hi Cassie. Great question and one I get asked frequently on our course actually! Allergies have become increasingly common in Western societies, which is very likely linked to lifestyle/diet mostly. Allergies occur when the immune system acts in an abnormal way to attack something that is, in its own right, harmless. It is the immune response which is harmful. So the ultimate question to ask is: why is the immune system acting in such a dysfunctional way? This is very much down to the individual, and what I normally explain is that this can be a result of factors such as poor gut health (bearing in mind that 70% of your immune system is in your gut!), poor nutrition (e.g. high in sugar and processed foods which compromise the immune system and promote inflammation), environmental toxins (e.g. those found in non-organic food, tap water, kitchen utensils, cosmetics, air/pollution etc.). It is also common for those with allergies to have low vitamin D levels – this is because vitamin D normally helps to regulate/normalise the immune response. So making sure you have optimal vitamin D levels is crucial. If you want to learn more about this you may want to check out some short courses that we have created such as How The Body Works or Nutrition for Everyday Living. I hope that helps to explain a bit more!
@Bobby Qureshi Thanks for the answer.
I’m currently working on a non sugar, non dairy non meat type diet (turning 45 this year) and trying to flush out heavy pain meds after 10 years of being pretty sedentary. (spine surgery to remove long growing benign tumour in spinal column) I’ve come down mg ‘s of meds, and utilising lymphatic drain massage, cycling, yoga and other holistic self care treatments. Bamboozled about my nut reaction, I really quite miss them!
