An art school professor once told Deborah Willis that she, as a woman, was taking a place from a good man — but the storied photographer says she instead made a space for a good man, her son Hank Willis Thomas. In this moving talk, the mother and son artists describe how they draw from one another in their work, how their art challenges mainstream narratives about black life and black joy, and how, ultimately, everything comes down to love.

I like how their art challenges mainstream narratives about black life and black joy, and how, ultimately, everything comes down to love.
Personally, I think most people would think that applying race to such a concept removes a large portion of the meaning in it. If different races love differently, then humanity becomes more divided for no reason. You aren’t really making any progress with the way people look at the black community if you separate yourself from everyone else. Just make art, there’s no need for it to be black art because that removes the unique nature of it, just as white art would.
Pugpugpugs i agree…. I was all excited when I first started listening to this until I heard the word… I think the same thing …I don’t look at this and start thinking oh they’re black artists or there is a black mother and a black son… I’m listening to their words about the compassion and then they put the word out there ~ that divides… I don’t understand why there needs to be separation.
