Want to help map the world? Community builder Rebecca Firth explains how the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is using open-source software powered by volunteers to put one billion people on the map in the next five years. (This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)

  1. Ever stop to think some people dont want to be on a map … I for 1 do not . i worked extra hard to find a place off the map and here you go ruining that ….

  2. For anyone who didn’t understand adding people on maps, doesn’t mean adding that this is steve’s house and that one is Harry’s they are speaking about places in Africa where if you open google maps or bing or others, you won’t see buildings and roads, you will see a blank white page.
    Mapping people means adding buildings/roads/schools etc, so that Aid organization are able these populations.
    So yes, a person like you living in a first world country, would open google maps to navigate to anywhere in your country, others aren’t even recognized on it, and HOT aims to help them.
