Fashion designers have the power to change culture — and Becca McCharen-Tran is using her platform to expand the industry's narrow definition of beauty. Sharing highlights of her work, McCharen-Tran discusses the inspiration behind her norm-shattering designs and shows how she's celebrating beauty in all forms. "I want the consumer to know that it's not your body that needs to change — it's the clothes," she says.

Is this a new record or sth?
tally lag
I’m relieved to see it tbh.
“Cis-gender models”
Because women don’t have bulges
So design something that allows them to hide their bulge, a swimsuit bottom designed to maintain a tuck if need be, design for a transitioning woman.
@Adam Wasserman IT’d be like that scene from Ace ventura pet detective lol.
@Adam Wasserman or they can just accept that they’re a man.
As Above So Below
Haven’t seen it, wouldn’t know, but you’re almost certainly being insensitive and transphobic
@keenarnia
You’re absolutely being transphobic, women who are trans are still women, their body just doesn’t match their brain and psychology, so giving them a way to express and present themselves in a way that they feel comfortable with is not only kind but necessary for their psychological wellbeing.
That was the most rushed and scuffed cat walk scene I have ever seen. Way too fast
That is actually quite common for the ending part of a runway show tho
Fashion models should not be super thin but also not as fat as some of the ones featured here, since it promotes an unhealthy way of eating in both cases. Yes, some curves are okay but going beyond that quickly causes health issues. While beauty is debatable, the effects of the BMI on health is not; it is fact.
@John Chapman Welll I am,sweetie. Sorry to ruin your day.
@Linguistie I don’t need a doctor to know I feel great
@Crucibelle Sorry you’ve been brainwashed
@TheOneReborn Hope you’re happy telling someone you hope they die
@Anne Schultz *oh boy* this will not age well
Let’s see the line of clothing dedicated to guys under 5’5″.
@lagynas yeah… No. No need to fat shame,to make yourself feel better. No need to be talking down to people. Be a better Man, I’m sure more women will be attracted to you.
@Low Blow Yeah like fit, skinny and other types of people not being shamed for some other reasons… But somehow society tends to defend obese people. Sorry that I used word “whale”, I don’t intend to call out people, I don’t feel better for it. When surrounding people laughs from others I usually don’t go with them because my whole life I’m being bullied at some degree. Anyhow, I will not support obesity as it is not good future for society. I’m just like these people, lazy af and have lack of will to change my life. I have every opportunity to do it.
@lagynas Nobody is here supporting obesity as a healthy lifestyle. You keep saying something that is not happening. Get a grip. People’s (men and women) metabolisms and body structures are just simply different and deserve to be recognized and celebrated as as different. Men don’t get cellulite, like women do, because of the different structure of men and women’s skin. Women’s skin is structured differently in order to be able to compensate for stretching, while pregnant. Men do not need this skin structure and so do not have it.
@Low Blow some men have it, seen with my own eyes
@lagynas Nice! Celebrate men’s cellulite! Get your (Literally) groove on!
Fat is not a body type. Its a body state.
@Heather Burch your frame could be bigger, but not 100 pound of fat bigger lol, that’s just obesity
Sur Price The point I was trying to make is that she maintains twice the body mass on the same caloric intake and exercise level.
As I said, I could starve her down a few pounds but why. If she is not over eating and is exercising then I believe she is the weight she is meant to be.
I think this applies to humans as well. To assume that one is unhealthy or has unhealthy habits because they carry more weight is a bias. There are many thin individuals who eat poorly and don’t exercise and are very unhealthy. Yet we do not feel it is appropriate to judge them as our society has set the norm of thin good fat bad. If you buy into that you need to take a few steps back and rethink your position.
Very true!!
We shouldn’t celebrate being unhealthy, at either end of the spectrum.
It’s not like the people they showed were morbidly obese. You can be healthy even if you’re not super skinny
Being fat is NOT OKAY! You’re NOT WELL and need to go see a doctor and lose some weight!
Labyrinth9000 Nope!
@Labyrinth9000 Easy to say; the reality is much more difficult and for more reasons than almost anyone can appreciate who isn’t in the situation. Let’s have some compassion for what others are going through. Their shoes might cripple you if you had to walk in them for a mile.
@Raptor Jesus Having a gut means you have a lot of vicral fat, which means your organs and cardiovascular system are being destroyed. Having a gut is _never_ healthy.
I challenge anyone to name anything more superficial than fashion.
@Low Blow Also the amount of vegans that eat tons of avocados (one of the biggest reasons the Amazon is getting burned down).
@Violet Fyxe We grow avocados in California. You can empower Growers of avocados by buying avocados that are grown in the United States
エリック Very well said. Double like if I could. ❤️
You win.

wE LivE iN a SoCiEtY
but thats just the obvious
Don’t mind me, I’m just scrolling through the comments.
You wouldn’t celebrate a smoke or an alcoholic for being an addict. Being over weight or obese should not be celebrated. It’s not healthy for you.
First they got the obesity epidemic, then instead of addressing it, they try to destroy beauty and health standards. This whole doctrine is plain stupid and dangerous.
exactly its also an addiction, a food addiction.
Shhhh… people hate taking responsibility for their own actions
People with low self-confidence have to boost their ego somehow, which in this case is celebrating their bad living habits. Of course, being over weight doesn’t automatically mean being a worse person and over weight people should not be doomed to a low self-confidence, but celebrating something that may and will eventually kill a person to boost self-confidence? That is not the way to go.
just plain sad really
TED you were a great rational free thinking channel…. now you spew alot of crap…. i need facts not feelings….. i need science… not this BS…
God it’s like you people come from a different planet, constantly spewing “fAcTS > fEeLiNgS” Have you never taken a public speaking course? Not even willing to dabble yourself in the arts of rhetoric? Do you think facts change the perspective of people? Because if so, go back to your planet. Welcome to the real world where you need facts, feelings, and credibility in speech not just facts and “sCiEnCe” Please educate yourself for the love of god….
@*Tea Truffel* are you new to ted talks? because emotional arguments don’t count as research, and you need to do your research before you do a fucking ted talk.
@*Tea Truffel* facts should change your perspective of anything and everything around you. Youre an idiot if you dont think actual real facts change your perspective. Such as the progression of the human race into a positive direction through survival of the fittest, in this case literally the fittest… if you use feelings to lie about what actually attracts people to one another to better suit YOUR needs. nobody wants to admit their flaws, i get that, but being a healthy and attractive human race is not a problem. being a stronger race moving forward is not a problem…. the FACT is, the world is overpopulated as it is, and i believe if you could take HALF of the current population, the half that is the most healthy, strongest immunities, the strongest, the smartest, the most driven…. youd have a better society.
@your father yeah this person is ridiculous. it doesnt do any good to lie and say that things are attractive or healthy because they say so, not because things are naturally attractive. things in nature are attractive or unattractive based on health and strength and survivability… But i can tell people how i NATURALLY feel about anything and can be told i’m horrendous things…. lol you cant help everyone
“TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. TED is owned by a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation. Our agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.” I don’t think TED was ever about science exclusively if you read their mission statement.
“morbidly obese” is not a “body type”, it’s a self inflicted disease. It should NOT be celebrated
The models were walking by so freaking fast omg
she literally said the “we live in a society” line
Unironically which is sad.
LOL, and let’s have a policy to “not tolerate intolerance”, she’s a parody of herself.
OK Spooner.
Well that is as expected….
This was the softest video I’ve seen in a while….
This fashion designer doesn’t seem to know what body types really are. They’re the body shape, the proportions that you were born with, like someone maybe pear shaped, apple shaped, inverted triangle or hourglass. To be a good designer would design clothes that suit and flatter each of those shapes, not just keep making clothing larger and call it body positivity.
Promoting obesity is doing a lot of harm to the society. I live in Canada, and while about 10-15 years ago Canadians are still generally quite fit, nowadays I see more and more obese people especially in the rural areas where people are less conscious about what they eat.
If we only promote obesity on the mainstream media and do nothing to educate on how to eat properly, people will continue down that rabbit hole and think to themselves that being obese is the norm and keep their old lifestyle that lead them to obesity.
they give ted talks to anyone for anything
