As someone who grew up in conservative small town and now lives in metro liberal city, this is absolutely correct in terms of filter bubbles and bias.
at this point I define social media not as tools used to socialise with other people, but tools that turn socialisation and interaction into a game. things like Instagram where people will make a post, not because they want to share something interesting with their friends, but because they want to gain likes and followers. These platforms that allow you to interact with your hundreds of followers, but really you don’t have a genuine interaction with a single one of them. It slowly but powerfully replaces the actual reward of interacting with people with an evaluation in numbers and notifications.

Your point “but really you don’t have a genuine interaction with a single one of them” is the key to the changes taking place because of these social media’s having a global effect on “Quality of Communication”, imho. One liners, smug/snarky/… remarks along with emojis’ do nothing to really bring people together in a qualitative ways but do give Big Data and Algorithms all they need to lead and direct your attention to their $$ ends. The idea of sitting around the kitchen table or the living room having meaningful, exploratory and visionary discussions with a qualitative outcome are being reduce to the what’s the next i-Toy and how many emojis’ can I use to express vague, multi or misleading feelings or thoughts…or worse yet no live “conversation” because they are tweeting 144 characters or following/liking on Facebook.
Perhaps life is a game but without a Joy in it or morals, ethics or Real Communication it becomes a treadmill generator for those that wrote the social media game.
Most of us already do this, wtf is this video? I think people who actively ignore people of other political views are a minority, or leftists, the rest of us prioritize other aspects of a person than putting political opinions near the top of “attributes my friends must have”-list before we befriend them
Thanks, im neither right nor left though but thanks for the assumption. Very few people are narrow minded, don’t know what you get that idea from that most are, maybe you hang out with the wrong people or live in a bubble of back patting peers. Most of us though walk through our life without caring what our fellow human votes, we have better things to do and more important things to judge our friendships by. Pretty obvious though that lefties, especially far leftist has ha really really hard time accepting that people have different political views than themselves, judging by all the temper tantrums, the violence, the rioting, the destruction of public and private property, assaults etc etc the leftist show time and time again when they get a healthy dose of reality when people don’t agree with their views, far far far more so than righties. Righties = mostly verbal, leftiest = verbal and physical.

The speakers are talking about social media algorithms and how they’re designed to feed you information you already agree with. If you use Facebook, YouTube, etc. you’re getting information from this algorithm. Period. Also, it’s more than a little bit ironic that you tout your immunity to these algorithms, then RIGHT AFTER THAT say people who ignore other political opinions are “leftists”. You’re exactly the person this video is talking about, you’re just hilariously oblivious to it.

There’s a lot of “how” and a lot of “what”, but there’s no much “why” here. Why should I break down the filter bubble? Why should I make friends with those other people?
They want to slaughter the poor, they want to enable genocide, they want millions to die and tens of millions to be displaced because of climate change.
I don’t want these people to be my friends.

If you understand why they think what they do, then you’ll either understand human nature better or change your mind. I doubt most people like those things. They just don’t understand and if you can figure out how to make them understand then that’s a huge step forward. It’s not easy, and probably not worth it for many, but it’s still a good way to get out of your comfort zone and become more empathetic.
You see, that’s exactly why you should talk to people.
For instance, if I like capitalism and the free market, does that mean I hate the poor? That’s the opposite, capitalism is the only way to actually help the poor, every thing the government does is to mess up stuff. If you study a little you’ll see that I’m right in many ways, and that there can be a different view from yours with both the same goal (to help people).
That’s just one very small and simple example.
Here’s the thing, I have actually spoken to some people about it and..they rarely give your answer. More often than not they think that the people who cannot afford food deserve what happens to them, or that its the fault of foreigners for existing, or that it’s simply not their responsibility. It’s becoming less “this is the best way for all” and more “It’s bad but it hurts people I hate which is good”

Here’s the reason: if you confine your life to discussions within “the bubble,” you cannot effect change. You no longer influence society. You’re, at best, preaching to the (your) choir — by definition.
It may not be comfortable. It may feel like annoying or irritating work. It is, in fact, uncomfortable and irritating to have these conversations. However, if *you* aren’t doing this work, then who will be? Is our political discourse supposed to be about who has more children that they can indoctrinate?! Of course not.
Spouting your opinion on FB/etc., of course, doesn’t work well because the algorithm enforces the filter bubble. Real friendships must be formed. Pre–supposing “republicans” as those who “want to slaughter the poor” shuts down your ability to influence a “hard-line conservative ” into a housing-first member of the anti-homelessness anti-porverty group. In fact, I can’t recount the number of conservatives I’ve made think hard about the death penalty because I’ve asked them to think about the costs to society — economic costs — of the death row appeals process. The same fiscal argument (powerfully) applies.
You don’t have to be best-friends with people who disagree with you. But, if you cannot be at least casual acquaintances, poker or bridge buddies, then you’ll do absolutely nothing to make this world a better place.
Progress doesn’t come from shouting each other down or out-numbering each other.
The “why” is because you should sacrifice some personal comfort to improve the world for everyone else.

The field is not equal though, just look at how Twitter is treating conservatives, where is the conservative mainstream organization banning free speech to liberals? We are basically living in a liberal hegemony world in the West right now and conservative speech is seriously getting discriminated against.
