As a black female from a tough part of the Bronx who matured to attain all the markers of scholastic eminence, Dena Simmons knows that for students of color, success in school in some cases comes at the cost of living authentically. Now a teacher herself, Simmons discusses how we might produce a class that makes all students feel pleased with who they are. "Every kid deserves an education that ensures the safety to discover in the convenience of one's own skin," she says.
