"If we ever thought that we could build an internet insulated from the dark side of humanity, we were wrong," Green says. "We have to throw our entire selves into building solutions that are as human as the problems they aim to solve."

I’d have to disagree with you. Youtube, facebook, twitter ect are not an authority, they are privately run and they have not only a right but a responsibility to moderate their comments. If you walked into a restaurant and shouted that you were going to murder someone, you would be kicked out because of course the restaurant wouldnt want you there. (and most likely arrested). So why shouldn’t social media sites do the same?

That’s not what we heard in this video.
Having AI being able to recognize insults allow them to be more accurate. A human moderator would also suppress a comment with an insult or a threat. I like talking IRL with people who disagree with me, but I don’t find it constructive when I’m insulted for my ideas, gender, color, sexuality ect
And having AI giving in advance an idea of the reception of your words can also be interesting, it’s harder to have empathy online, when you don’t see someone’s face. And it’s difficult to recognize an intention just from word. If someone tells me “You are stupid” IRL, I will Know if he means it, if he is joking or not by his tone, by looking at his face ect…none of this is possible online…so AI can be way to remember how to be more empathic while freely expressing our ideas to people who will be more receptive because they will feel respected…
That’s my point of view anyway.

I think this is more about the anti-cyberbullying segment of the speech. He is probably trying to say that you shouldn’t be so hurt over people bullying you over the internet.
Jason Zheng the statistics don’t show whether it’s cyber bullying or other environmental factor that is causing it. Maybe one should research at least the causes of suicide before you go blatantly toggle the freedom of speech, not that you should even after that. There are just too many ways to abuse the system if you go that way

Ben Porter Nope… listened to the whole thing. The real issue is how to they define and “extremist”. When the folks at Google call the thoughts of people like James Damore and Jordan Peterson extremist then there is a big problem with their definition. Educating people to prevent radicalization into violence is definitely a great thing to do. However the way they are defining extremism is very broad right now.

I agree with R Nicole. This is the underlaying thought I saw behind her beautiful slogans of offering Options. Machines learning what the best options are is basically giving you the template how to behave. And if you won’t behave in the manner of that template – you will be an extremist / outcast / “the other”.
I don’t condemn the whole point of their work. It just is a thin line, between Free Choice and The Correct Choice. Freedom of expression should be kept 100% free. Not an option, if you express yourself wrong you will end up on the naughty list, and man in black suits come and visit you once you post “wrong think” online.
Everyone should adhere to the law. And law should be thaught at school. Values, Principles, Virtues – those things should be spread like wildfire over the world. And once you break those values, once you abandon your virtues and no longer adhere to the principles – then you should be punished or at least shown the wrong in your ways. This is a thin line. Even my own words to mself feel like I am one step from warning to dictatorship. I just hope humanity will choose understanding, empathy, love and growth.
teclit Tlane… I agree with you that exposing people to alternative ideas s a great thing! I just don’t agree that Google and Youtube are actually doing that. I think they are actually trying to funnel the public into a “correct” way of thinking by blocking videos with undesirable content and pushing videos with “correct” messaging. Also, my concern about this isn’t based on what she specifically said on the video, but on the censorship that has been actively occurring on youtube (owned by google) over the last year. If google tightened up their definition of extreme content to really mean violent terrorist propaganda then I don’t see it as a problem.

Am I the only one who thinks that the more we try to censor people, the more online anti-bulling methods we try to implement, actually hurts people more? It makes people (especially young people) way too fragile and emotionally sensitive for what actually happens in the real world. Too much fragility is counterproductive. I think a better solution is how do we encourage youth and people in general, to get offline more and go out and live more in the real world. Talk to your families, go for a nature walk with friends, actually communicate with schoolmates and coworkers. It seems like we’re trying to find ways to keep people more online, which is more dehumanizing, in my opinion. **if you choose to engage in my comment, be willing to discuss as I am simply asking a question**

It’s not hard to be fairly neutral. Personal attacks that include cuss words, for example, are an aggressive style of “communicating” that is ALWAYS aggressive. Threatening bodily harm is always aggressive. Not too difficult for a robot to point out. Yes, there are words that are borderline insulting (i.e. not cuss words or slanderous words, but historically uncomfortable, or non-preferred labels), and the people writing them will still have the choice to use them or not.
iliveasnatalie I feel that most of these Problem come back to Parenting. Parents don’t engage with their children enough, don’t want to communicate and explain things to their children. Instead they put em in front of the TV, or the Computer and then freak out about everything when their kids develop bad habits. Their Is a reason Steve Jobs never let his kids use an iPhone or iPad, why Facebook execs don’t allow their kids to use Facebook or use it themselves. People tend to not put themselves in their kids shoes,nor more importantly… remember what it was like when they were a kid. How annoying it was when adults would ignore us, talk at us or over us, would say “because I said so that’s why”…that as kids we too could put a puzzle together, that kids remember things and just because they don’t understand something they see you do or hear you say at the moment, they will remember it and one day they will find out what it was or what it means and they will resent you for it..for lying to them. If a child is old enough to formulate a question organically then they are old enough to hear the honest answer. And you owe it to them to tell them…not your skewed interpretation but the honest objective truth and help teach them to come to their own conclusions. Help Teach them to use reason and logic. Furthermore, if you don’t know the answer, you owe it to them to tell them as much and to say something to the effect of ” I don’t know that but I want you to know what it means, so why don’t we both go find out”…so the kids trusts you, knows it is ok to not know something and admit to it, that it is not a flaw or a weakness, that they can come to you for answers. Lastly, our entire Society encourages People to look externally for all the answers, to cherish materialism. It is creating whole generations if shallow, materialistic, morally bankrupt People. It is important, crucially so, to teach our children to go within..to cherish Introspection, self reflection, analyse what our role was in each situation and what we could have done differently and apply that, to remain humble and vigilant so as to not get arrogant and short sided, and to be HONORABLE and DECENT because that is how Society remains peaceful. One doesn’t need religion or even to believe in God to be spiritual. One is systemic while the other is Personal. If you don’t believe in the tenants of religion to gain morality, then try philosophy (which translates to lover of wisodm). Either one especially classic philosophers, taught the importance of going within, to think of others when making decisions that could affect others, of just basical humanity and morality. Because there is a huge chasim forming by the vacuum left in the wake of this atheism and materialism that is being taught all over to our children. Don’t push religion on the kids because it makes em rebel…but offer them these options, each leading to moral thinking..and let the make up their mind. Lead a horse to water and all that. Forgive me for using so many “you gotta..” or “parents must…”. “you should…” Just was a little overtaken by what I was trying to rite and get it all out…I too, don’t like being sold what I should or shouldn’t do, which also reinforces my point about not being Demanding or forceful with with your kids

For better or worse, the internet is as real as the real world in certain ways. As it becomes a bigger part of our lives, it will become more important than the world it is built in. For some people, it already is.
Hiding one’s head in the sand and pretending this is just a phase we’ll get over is beyond optimistic – like brushing of newspapers and mail and tv programming.
We need to provide kids with the kind of environment they can grow and flourish in. It is beyond debate, at this point, that children are becoming socially stunted due to lack of social development online. They’ve been raised on memes and 1-liner insults. We’re creating generations of sociopaths.

Not blanket censorship, she only mentioned censoring in brief detail. She focused mainly on redirecting vulnerable groups to anti-ISIS material if they search up how you, for example, join ISIS. I’m not saying that they aren’t censoring, but this speech was less about censorship and more about how you redirect traffic from ISIS to anti-ISIS

Would you rather be sitting there watching ISIS gradually draw in supporters or take action against them? I’m not sure that they are outright censored, but according to this speech, Jigsaw is only adding ads to the top of the search feed. If you were actually trying to find evidence-based information, you could see the “AD” sign below the title of the website. They are not feeding information to anyone. FFS did you watch the speech or are you a sheep who believes that anything that a comment says is the truth and only that.
