Story time! Gather ’round kids!
Oh look how horrible that two ladies with different skin colours felt like they have a connection. So terrifying man I am gonna dislike before watching the video! ” this is sarcasm if you didn’t get it yet”
I made an observation and the responses are non-answers full of sarcasm. I like Carl Zimmer’s opinion on why TED talks are losing their steam is that the “talks have to feel new, and they have to sound as if they have huge implications.” There is no huge implication here – just two women and a poem. If not for the content of their message, why are they here? Why would TED choose to pick these racially dynamic individuals, despite not fitting the profile for content they release?
It’s not about brainwash or conspiracies. It’s about understanding why each side feels the way they do – not trying to start a fight where you run back to your team (left or right) and simply follow their ideas, effectively accomplishing nothing.
shugo104 they are there cause it was a funny poem? you either read too deep into it or you didn’t bother reading into it at all. Either way too much of anything spoils it. Also I am neither left nor right I just don’t like people disliking content just because it happens to be inclusive.

I’d like to respond to your comment about this presentation not conforming to TED’s “mission,” or profile as you put it. In actuality, TED’s mission statement, visible if you click “Show More” under the description allows most anything:

So what defines TED-quality talks? *Ideas worth spreading.* From their website (https://www.ted.com/about/our-organization) “TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). Our Mission: Spread ideas” What idea is worth being spread here? This is a performance, not a talk.
If you see the performance as worthy in content to be selected by TED, what features do you believe were prioritized for selection? Is their story *really* that interesting or different than others you’ve heard before? Are their ideas worth spreading to the masses? To me, no. I believe they’re simply two cordial women sharing a poem together who were absolutely selected based off of race.

There are plenty of ted talks I dont care for either….but I couldnt dismiss it simply because it doesn’t resonate. Geezus you negative nancies need to grow up!

The comments didn’t sound overly negative to me just confused like myself . I tune in to hear true stories and discoveries not play recitals . Maybe it was leading up to there sisterhood discovery . I lost patience about two minutes of the way through but at any rate it was taking them a long time to get to that point .
The purpose of TED is making the world a better place. It’s about positivity.
Even if the talks aren’t always interesting I don’t think they deserve all the hate people give them in the comments.
If you really care about what TED is trying to do, you souldn’t be so narrow-minded.
On the other hand, if you you really believe that your hateful comments are more legitimate than the people doing the talks, I don’t think TED is for you.
I’m into it: art, poetry, love, and deep connections are absolutely ideas worth spreading. Keep it coming, TED ❤
They take half their time to get to the point. A thesis should always be at the beginning…
Leland Martineau, this isn’t a speech. This is a play. It’s art, the “point” isn’t always going to be obvious, or presented in the beginning. They are taking you on a journey.

Justine L because a large portion of the people who watch TED watch it for new developments in Science, Technology, Education and Math.
These videos get so many dislikes for a reason. People generally expect to learn something from a TED talk, and when they instead get the ‘E’ of TED, which is ‘Entertainment’ they are disappointed. Art is extremely subjective and what most people consider their favorite art typically isn’t appreciated by a very wide audience. This is especially true for art in the form of poetry that doesn’t resonate with their demographic or experience. I don’t know why TED tries so hard to entertain with art at all, they should stick to what people appreciate the most about their brand, learning about the cutting edge in science and technology.
Forgive me but I really don’t understand why this is here.
Human stories and how they are expressed are even more diverse the individuals telling them because it is a blend of their uniqueness. Even when I don’t “resonate” with a story does not mean I cannot appreciate it’s distinct beauty. Appreciate peoples vulnerability and transparency.
