In 2009, journalist and screenwriter Drew Philp bought a ruined house in Detroit for $500. In the years that followed, as he gutted the interior and removed the heaps of garbage crowding the rooms, he didn't just learn how to repair a house — he learned how to build a community. In a tribute to the city he loves, Philp tells us about "radical neighborliness" and makes the case that we have "the power to create the world anew together and to do it ourselves when our governments refuse."

Radical neighborliness only happens among people who can afford to trade their time for very few dollars (or no dollars at all). Most folks do not have that luxury.

Your first thought was not “Oh he must be talking about the chinese!” was it?
The entire talk was “The ghetto is growing because people of color can’t get loans from banks, and because the suburbs refuse to sell to them because white people don’t want black people in their neighbourhoods”
The real reason is the black culture that is rampant right now, they actively discourage education and improving you life by attacking and shaming people who do educate themselves and try to get somewhere.
The amount of black friends i have that refuse to go home to their old areas for fear of getting attacked for being “uncle tom’s” because they decided to support themselves and make something of their lives is disgusting.
I was working on my car when 3 teens from down the block stopped to talk to me. They figured out I was neighborly. Soon, they were stalking my house and burglarizing me every time I left. The police did not care and there was no hard evidence except that I saw them walking by every time I was leaving and it started right around when I met them. Finally, one of them I knew was the main thief came to the door asking for water because he said theirs was turned off. He came in and ran out with a laptop. Then I tried to get it back and he and his friends assaulted me forcing me to defend myself with my bike lock chain. Then I broke their window with a rock and 3 of them chased me back to my house with rocks in hand. I then got home, got in my car, and drove toward them. They scattered and called the police, snitching on me and changing the story around so they looked totally innocent. I went to prison for 2 years and was facing 35 years before I took a plea bargain. They all went to jail for meth and one of them went to jail for life because they robbed and killed an old man in his house for his checkbook. They are all evicted and i’m still here in this house. This is radical neighborliness. I took on an entire gang of lying, stealing, meth addicted snitches and paid the price to have my community and neighborhood at peace again.
