Mayor Rudy Giuliani became mayor in 1994 and although he focused mainly on Manhattan, his policies greatly cleaned up the Bronx and brought down the crime rates dramatically (faster than other parts of USA). This opened the way for new businesses and investment the Bronx. I know because a dear friend of mine bought one of the first Golden Krust Carribean Bakery franchises in 1997. Giuliani tried to improve the schools but met tremendous resistance from the NYC Board of Ed. In 2001 Mayor Bloomberg was given the authority to choose the person overseeing the NYC schools, so now charter schools are increasing and making a big difference in the kids test scores.
Not sure why we call it “the Bronx” ? The only boro here in NYC that we put the word “the” in front of… Peace✌… from the Brooklyn.
