What if tiny microparticles could help us solve the world's biggest problems in a matter of minutes? That's the promise — and magic — of quantum computers, says Matt Langione. Speaking next to an actual IBM quantum computer, he explains how these machines solve complex challenges like developing vaccines and calculating financial risk in an entirely new way that's exponentially faster than the best supercomputers — and shares why industries should prepare now for this new leap in computing.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Future:computerised eyball.
Is that a quantum computer or are they distilling Whiskey?
You’re actually not far off. The coils on the computer are for cooling the chip to an extremely low temperature – quantum computers can only operate at near-absolute zero temperatures which is one of the major hurdles in the technology currently. Similarly the copper coils in a distillation rig are for bringing evaporated alcohol down to a liquid temperature.
@Vincent Martin That doesn’t sound similar at all my man. One is extreme, the other is room temperature.
@Vincent Martin so I am simultaneously correct and incorrect. Truth in jest, I guess. On a more serious note, thanks for the explaination. Pretty neat. 🙂
There’s no need to wait years to distill and age whiskey. The quantum computer can do it in minutes!
The power is both exciting and kind of terrifying.
Don’t worry it will end up only helping the bourgeoisie to profit more and the rest of the working class will continue being explored
@Raphael Vasconcellos *exploited
@Raphael Vasconcellos that certainly
Really well delivered and engaging material in an area that is becoming somewhat saturated with voices saying the same mundane things
Thats great! Does it come in black!
A few days ago I saw Microsoft Mesh trailer and now this
My concern is not with the quantum computer, rather, my concern is with those who salivate at the chance to use it to further their own selfish agenda.
My thoughts exactly. More power for corporations & government. That’s the last thing we need
Quantum computing… in gaming. pls
Seems like we have the capacity to understand science and technology to a great extent, but if we don’t have the level of consciousness to use such tools with pure intentions we will be putting ourselves into an ugly “feedback loop”…
*TED Speaker:* Quantum computing can find an oil well in just 24 hours
*America:* Let’s dominate this tech… For oi.. I mean for science!
Why even bother searching for oil at this point
@Vincent Fischer money and greed.
A very clear explanation, although I object to the part about the banks keeping money in reserve. That is not because they lack the computing power, but because their central banks force them to.
Without that limit on banks lending out money, all banks would be constantly lending out money and money would, effectively, cease to be a useful means for trading.
The “stimulus every year” will be going to the ultra-rich. We need to get humanity right with itself and each other before we blunder into all of this power. We only get one screw-up after the singularity occurs.
Agreed.
what if we where to introduce endocrine disrupting chemicals into the food and plastics? would this aid in the process of detaching the mind from the body?
I see the strong AI in the horizon, and we can only pray and hope for the best
I saw quantum and thought that it was gonna be like ant man
This guy talks so slow. I recommend you watch this video at 2x playback.
That’s kind of insane that we already know of ways to solve certain problems but can’t do it because we don’t have the technology yet.
Loved the info but it was shot so weird
