Still invisible and often an afterthought, indigenous peoples are uniting to protect the world's water, lands and history — while trying to heal from genocide and ongoing inequality. Tribal attorney and Couchiching First Nation citizen Tara Houska chronicles the history of attempts by government and industry to eradicate the legitimacy of indigenous peoples' land and culture, including the months-long standoff at Standing Rock which rallied thousands around the world. "It's incredible what you can do when you stand together," Houska says. "Stand with us — empathize, learn, grow, change the conversation."

United – that’s the keyword. In the U.S. the culture never ever said we should unite instead it embraces individuality. You need to change the culture from a base level.And look at what we call groups of people – a mob, or mob group-think.

I have contention with people choosing freely to marginalize themselves, and then complaining about being marginalized. I was hoping she would talk more about the specifics about the standing rock issue, rather than just revel in emotionalism and just assert her own importance. Talking about human resistance clashing with human resistance. Do school history teachings focus on my German and Norwegian immigrant ancestors….no….nor should they. People who want to look into those matters can do so if they choose rather than be spoon fed.The information for learning about Native American history is readily available and if people want to delve into a specific ethnicity history they can do so. I have, and my knowledge has surpassed the average education on the subject by the Disney movies. Your average public school does not go into such specific and narrow studies for a reason.
I do not think Native Americans are served well by this attitude of “we are ignored” even as they give TED talks or are on the main, and alternative news all the time. Identity politics is a quagmire of inverted thinking. She personally is not a genocide survivor.
I want to know some facts about the pipe line. Can we get some of that? As it is you will be relevant for another few months until people move on to the next thing to get emotionally invested in. This is why if you want lasting resistance you have to appeal to something less fluctuating than emotionalism and virtue signaling. Those things are changed fad to fad like the latest clothing brands. That is why you will be ignored until popular culture wants to dust you off and drag you out to feel virtuous again about you.
Tybalt Ambrose To your first point: I went to public school, we were still taught more than dates and names. U.S. History classes teach a narrative about what this nation is, how it came to be, and what its values are.
Sure, I can memorize the dates of the Civil War (1861-1865), The Reconstruction (1865-1877), The Great Migration (1920’s), the Civil Rights Era (1954-1968), and 2008 presidential election but these are more than dates. They tell a specific story and narrative about a people (guess which people). So to pretend as if history classes are no more than dates and names is disingenuous. Who we choose to focus on and mention says much about what we consider important and how we see ourselves as a nation.
Tybalt Ambrose To your second point: Don’t have time to be taught? That’s funny. America is barely 250 years old. If Europeans with their 1000 year old history and Asians with their 3000+ year old history, have time to teach it all, then why not America? This is a very weak excuse on your part.
Tybalt Ambrose To your last point: Recording and documenting oral history is not impossible, especially when Native American descendants still exist to tell it. Lack of oral history hasn’t prevented us from learning about ancient cultures, it’s simply done through anthropological methods: studying artifacts, trade relations, languages, organization, etc. How many Americans know the details of the Iroquois Confederacy and its influence on the U.S. constitution? Native Americans are a unique part of American history whether you want to acknowledge that or not.

I am glad to see the native nations coming together in the U.S. and Canada. It is time to support them with $$$ and voices. There are legitimate treaties that have been run over by both countries over the decades. It is time to stand up. It is time to go to the U.N. and demand membership, and demand full treaty rights.
