Neuroscientist Kay M. Tye investigates how your brain gives rise to complex emotional states like depression, anxiety or loneliness. From the cutting edge of science, she shares her latest findings — including the development of a tool that uses light to activate specific neurons and create dramatic behavioral changes in mice. Learn how these discoveries could change the way you think about your mind — and possibly uncover effective treatments for mental disorders.

Since I read about this I was terrified and ecstatic about it.
Exactly, who are we sharing our world with? This is the first step in mental health.
Me, Myselfie & Eye?!

Oh boy mind control

.
Your gov’t has recommened and demands your immediate reprogramming.
Dw it’s the next generations that will be engineered to be controlled hahaha.
What if we are already controlled to be weebs?
Perhaps it is just a form of “mind demographics”, so the researchers can get the lay of the land as they attempt to go where no man or woman has gone before. Don’t get trapped in my mind, unless you enjoy a captive lifestyle. LOL. She is correct when she says that not much has changed since the 1950’s!

@Sherry Dee edumacation…now is the time for rods in our heads, so we can better be productive and loyal to our great wage lord masters. All hail, all hail the brain rods…i mean peace rods.
I know it’s still in its infancy , but how would it work with a human subject ? Optical fiber surgically implanted into the brain , or could it be modified somehow to be administered by TCS ?
Basically accelerated and manipulated neuroplasticity?
A. H. Yup
Light sensitive mices lol!
I agree that the mind arises from the brain and that effective treatment for mental health disorders relies upon reprogramming the brain. Current treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy seeks to change mental habits through repetition. I hope that even if physical reprogramming of the brain becomes possible that we don’t discount the power we already have over our own minds.
This does not necessarily demonstrate that the brain creates the mind. This may just as easily demonstrate that she has found a way to override the mind’s control of the brain.
So… It’s possible to control people’s behavior with electromagnetic radiation?
Time to make a tinfoil hat
Apparently it requires brain surgery, implants and a flashlight. You’re safe as long as you haven’t had any alien abduction episodes lately. Missing any time?
we are the mouse. Prove me …(Too Busy trying to survive to considering…)
Science that puts even more nails into the coffin of mind-body dualism.
If our species is interested in surviving, mental health should be the fist priority. Good job, keep working.
Congratulations Kay M. Tye for your work that has opened a different and probably better gate for solving mental health problems and hopefully reducing the prejudice and stigma of those problems
6:32 but what about emotional eating?
This is naive thinking, if you take away the food coping mechanism, another coping mechanism will pop up… She’s just trying to create an alternative to drugs, and thus MAKE MONEY, instead of finding the cause of the self-harming behaviour or mental illness. “Oh you have problems? I don’t care about what happened to you, let me just zap your brain!” The more I listen the angrier I get…
This video sums up the reason why we have so much mental illness nowadays… everyone sees mental illness as a problem with ONLY the person, hence the stigma, and not ever the circumstances they live in / lived through.
Also, what if it’s applied outside of mental health?
Oh I don’t like that my kid’s an introvert, zap his brain!
Oh I don’t like that my spouse is always so angry at me, zap their brain!
Oh I don’t like that my kid is so poor in math (despite being good at art), zap his brain!
I predict a moratorium on her research…
