Colonialism remains an inescapable blight on the present, lingering in the toxic, internalized mythologies and stereotypes that have outlived the regimes that created them, says historian Farish Ahmad-Noor. Examining why these prejudices and narratives persist (and sometimes thrive), he suggests a multidisciplinary approach to reject cultural obsessions with romanticized history and prevent this nostalgia from perpetuating past oppressions.

Why is communism romanticized?
@نافذة على العالم Китай особого успеха не достиг, но благодаря поддержке мира взбирается на вершину.
@WattsWo look up the definition of communism you can’t have it unless you force everyone to comply.
А как вы думаете, почему Мир поддерживал Китай а не СССР, хотя у обоих коммунистическая система ?
@نافذة على العالم потому что:
1) Россию и до СССР считали врагом.
2) США считало, что Китай под её контролем.
Anti imperialism and communism are not mutually inclusive
The early bird catches the worm
You snooze, you lose.
Not all birds are after the worm
Farish Ahmad-Noor where is your family from and where do you live?
he is from Singapore. He is a Malay person. Singapore is in Malaya. The chinese took over his country from an uncontrollable chinatown and chinese immigrant
“Why is colonialism still romanticized?”
They’re literally destroying statues of abolitionists and religious images, there is no romanticization of colonialism outside of the media’s constant defence of China stealing other countries around them.
Recognising that there were some small benefits to some nations being colonized isn’t romanticizing it, it’s just being capable of seeing reality.
“they” sure is a broad term that leaves a lot of nuance conveniently out of the picture and sets the stage for a very skewed conversation
@Riverside it doesn’t need to be specific, we all know what he is talking about. We can see what is happening around us.
Yes, changes are hapening. But, in Brazil, for example, this debate is very restrict; just a small part of the society have this no romanticized vision. For the most part here we conservate various colonial stereotypes.
“China stealing other countries around them”. Lmao I can give you an example of a country who did 100 times worse to half the planet the last hundred years and still being perpetually romanticized for that.
@bbbeto02 yep some people easily forget obout EIC & VOC
Who ever has the latest and newest tech and weapons will take over ,but eventually get fat , lazy and rich and don’t forget greedy and ruthless that’s how it works -the guilt eventually eats at you
Howard N Not really, this is the tactic of cultural Marxism lead by multinationals to take over our countries.
Only weak white are brainwashed nowadays, especially in the US. How sad actually.
@The White Wolf everyone one is brainwashed, but only white agree to go against themselves.
It never was romanticized in my lifetime. You are beating a dead horse
You aren’t from the same country as him
Tell that to Trump and his clowns who just shot off fireworks at the sacred black hills that belong to the Lakota.
Have you ever heard of a Western film
OK, will continue my support to Putin
r u from the cia propaganda department? nice strawman
Well, he deserves it
Почему?
Very important especially considering the Chinese expansion taking place now.
Israeli expansion as well..
Some are more positive views than others and life was hard for everyone 400 yrs ago. Slow and obvious point!
What is the Mahgreb and the Mashriq Mr. Noor?
The west and the east
The Maghreb is north Africa. The Mashriq is The Orient (the middle -east)
Why are all time periods romanticized? Why ask about a specific period? Your question is not complete!
Because he can talk about whatever he wants to talk about.
WW2 isnt romanticized and his topic is colonialisim… whats your point
@Ammar Ali How is WW2 not colonialism? Please explain. Also i think the question is why do they always talk about european colonialism, which not even all european countries engaged in. And never asian, israeli, muslim, etc.? It has been plenty of other races colonizing others as well, but we never hear about so called ” people of colour “(which is a racist term in itself) colonialism.
Colonialism is not limited to any particular time period
@A. Mae i didnt say that. Read my comment again 😉
100 years ago he wouldn’t have been a professor with or without the West. It’s also hilariously funny that a South East Asian with an Arab name doesn’t realize that’s the result of Muslim colonialism.
You don’t see your ignorance do you?
@Wabanaki Islam is the biggest colonizer in south east asia. Malaysia and Indonesia is on the brink to become religious as Saudi arabia. Horrible .
Muslim colonialism ?
Have you seen south east asian culture , language & identity shattered like the way Britain, France, Portogal, Spain & Netherlands did to the rest of the world ? Lol
I can tell you here in Central/ Eastern Europe the only people who romanticize their colonization by the Soviet-Marxists are the elderly and and unemployable.
@The White Wolf You’ve better think about France. What I can see here is complete cuckoldism over whole nation
@Vlad Ankudinov thats how subversion works..
@The White Wolf what are you even talking about. None of that made any sense.
Vlad Ankudinov Also our fucking successive governments are compliant with this situation an even our most Conservative party represented at the presidential election (Marine Lepen) might be corrupted and wouldn’t do much for us if she’s becoming president.
Looks like Ted is running out of good speakers…:-)
2m into this presentation I already knew where he was going. I guess we should all return to our native lands and apologize to everyone for ever venturing off, apologize for our nation’s respective histories. Thank God the left & SJW’s are out here to remind us all of how evil we all are. I’m so sorrrryyyy.
So what your saying is. All self identified blacks should go back to africa.
Liam Winter he is sarcastic
Be careful who you listen too. This man certainly has an agenda.
Yes. The agenda of equality.

They promise to deliver equality but in reality your worth is that of a slave after they use you.
*Don’t be a useful idiot*
That is true we do “fall back on certain ideas that aren’t challenged.”
Garunetee that commenters that disagree of narrators point are not people who have felt the burn of colonialism. Isn’t that how it always is?
❤❤❤
