More than 500 different species of microbes live in our gut and our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, metabolism, brain function, and more. Simply put, they are critical to our long-term health. Imbalances in the gut ecosystem often trigger or exacerbate small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), along with many other issues.

Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to explain what SIBO is, how they diagnose and treat it in their patients, and why it is almost always paired with a number of other health issues. Dr. Hyman also shares his personal experience battling SIBO along with mercury poisoning.

George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy, “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. • I started reading. made choices, fired my medical advisors. I’m living better. Help Thy Self. Best of Luck to you Max. I starve.

  1. This should be taught starting in early grade school to every level of your education (high school/college) as a mandatory Health Class! This country would be much healthier, but the drug industry would prefer to make millions off of keeping us sick!

  2. I stopped listening to “Medical Advisors” their adivice only benifitted their real estate portfolios. I’ll never be cured but I’m living a very much imporoved quality of life. Less pills is much better for me. I can read and comprehend.

  3. First of all thank you for the podcast. 29:00 kind of what the header promises but not really. I like your podcasts a lot and this one is interesting as well. The click-baity title was a bit annoying – sorry.

  4. This describes what I went through for so many years, symptoms, doctor visits (gastro, rheumatologist, primary) medications and no resolution until I started watching dr hyman and other YouTube specialists. I wish this information would become mainstream to help more people.

    • Did you have leaky gut? I been sick for 3 years with major fatigue, low hormones, depression, brain fog, muscle pain, thyroid problems, I also tested so low on minerals and vitamins, also major allergies to food and other stuff.and also have sibo ,now working with a naturopath taking another stool, test for infection and leaky gut markers…. what helped you?

  5. As someone who has accepted their gut microbiome is completely screwed and someone that is trying to do something about it with diet and lifestyle changes these videos are disheartening. Having watched a few they come across as advertorial promoting functional health and even more so the clinics that practice it. There really are no practical tips or advice just ‘case studies’ with remarkable transformations’, the title of this video is pretty much click bait implying there is more.

I have no doubt you guys are doing great work, your enthusiasm is clear. That is little comfort to those that accept the message but have no access to your clinic or a functional health practitioner. I hope at some stage you might consider giving some practical tips on gut health, I’m sure it won’t impact on your primary business.

    • I am in the same boat in that it would be great to have the time and money to go to the Cleveland Clinic and get personal care one-on-one. But, it is what it is for you and others and me. But (yes, there is a but) it still comes down to me having to make the changes. One change I had to do was to do a boat load of research on my own, and I admit here some of that boatload is to no healthy avail for me (scams?). Some of who I refer to via YouTube are the following. All in all the lifestyle changes have to be made by you… as in, I do think that we all can figure it out mostly on our own. One has to do the research to recover ones well being as long as, if not longer, than it took to mess our selves up.

Channels that I follow so as to keep my mind and hence my thinking right:

      Dr Paul Mason
      Dr. Sam Bailey
      Jason Fung
      Low Carb Down Under
      Mark Hyman, MD
      Public Health Collaboration

There are more but this is what I speedily recall off the top of my head.

  6. This is exactly what I am going through. I went to ER due to heart palpitations of 180. No doctor could help me. They told me I should see a physiatrist…

  7. I had tons of SIBO symptoms and then added a cup of pomegranate juice to my diet each day and my sibo symptoms disappeared after a month. No joke.

  8. I was expecting food recommendations. No nutrients in my present diet and I feel great. I just quit taking most of my unnecessary pills and advice from professionals. I do my own thing and now ‘m on the mend.

    • @Kaldonia1111 Kaldonia That might not be functional medicine. For the appointments for most, it can be $500 for the initial. About $150-$250 for follow ups, and some of the tests are in the $350 range. Not affordable at all, but not $5000 (but I did call up a “lyme/cancer clinic”/ which is run by a functional doctor, and it was $50k starting- but it’s IV everything/ shotgun approach they use for all diseases, that apparently must help sometimes.

  9. I really enjoyed this and was very interested to hear about Sibo etc. I Sudbury quite get the foods that would help with this. I’m guessing the ketogenic diet etc. Thank you for sharing this info.

  10. That’s me all over! Wow.. thank you, I’m a man that has no ability to stay awake in the afternoon, and bloat so easily. Asthma I’m dyed of.. so terrible, I can’t breathe.

  11. There were no real recommendations in this video, I like your videos, they are educational, but sometimes it’s the same story over and over again “functional medicine is good, conventional medicine is bad”, I appreciate more details and real recommendations.

  12. What does emotions have to do with the intestines? The Bible calls the bowels the “seat of emotions” in the Old Testament. Even they knew back then, when you’re feeling strong emotions, you feel it in your gut, not your heart.
