Vitamins & Minerals To Support Your Brain Health

Dr. Dale Bredesen joined me on The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about how vitamin and mineral deficiencies can have a negative impact on our brain health, covid-19 outcomes, and much more.

You can listen to the full episode titled, “Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes”, on your favorite podcast app.

  1. What’s the most efficient way to hear full episodes? I listen as I’m commuting and clicking here and scrolling until I find an episode that matches the teaser isn’t helpful.

  2. Could my vitamin D levels be one of the reasons I’ve recovered so well from a serious Traumatic brain injury that included acute subdural haemorrhages, left subdural with subarachnoid haemorrhages, several blood clots and extensive base of skull and temperol fractures on the right?
When my craniectomy was finished (skull put back together) I needed a spinal tap that I seen remove around 6 litres of fluid over 6 days and I guess I had another spinal tap at the beginning while I was in a coma. For 2 years before my accident I took 20,000iu vitD a day, although cut it down at times when I was out in the sun a lot. I started taking it again when I came out of hospital in September, although cut it down to 10,000iu two weeks ago because the weather is getting better and I’m out cycling or hiking a lot and have a full semi- professional gym at home so have used it mainly for strength exercises with dumbbells and rowing machine workouts (when the weather wasn’t so good). I eat plenty of pasture raised and finished meat, free range eggs, high omega 3 fish and fruit and veg, pulses and nuts. I cut out grains and added a little more higher carb fruit and veg as wheat was triggering symptoms I was suffering with just after leaving hospital. I also took 1000mg choline, 1000mg magnesium L-Threonate, 600mg magnesium citrate, and 3mg melatonin for the last month

  3. Th big question about these anecdotal accounts is – how much of this improvement is based on the placebo effect? If the doctor had measured her new levels, and discussed an improvement in these levels, that’s better science.

I think some of this functional medicine is a big hoax. But not suprising – a lot of medical practices are really just trial and error and a lot of bad science – like lobotomy. Listener beware. Listening to this kind of half baked medical stories, could lead you into a lot of trouble, if you follow such poorly constructed advice.

I think there needs to be a bit more regulation and accountability, on Youtube. There is a lot of terrible unsubstantiated advice here, and unfortunately, unlike topics such as pornography, there is no censorship of these half baked assertions, which step carefully on what I would call – Fake news or false pretentions.

We need more sensorship of who and what can be said on youtube videos, especially in the area of health.

And the usual cop out where the creator of the video, adds “no accountability” clauses in the description or in the video itself is not good enough. If you are going to give advice, or an opinion, in your profession, in public, it should be subject to censorship. A bank CEO cannot go out in public and make statements about certain investments, willy nilly, cos they are liable for any decisions people make.

Making public statements about health, and then in the same breath, as a medical doctor, saying they do not take any responsibility for your actions based on their opinions, is hypocrisy and should be a crime. About time that things changed.

The whole Vitamin D issue has now been debunked. Its so stupid when you think of it. The people with higher Vitamin D levels are simply the people who have spent more time outdoors, moving about or taken Vitamin D regularly for a long while, i.e typically more enlightened and more educated, and most likely wealthier, and more likely to be living a healthier lifestyle, so Vitamin D is not causal, but associated.

i.e if you take Vitamin D, but live an otherwise unhealthy lifestyle, Vitamin D alone will not make you less prone to adverse outcomes of Covid. Much better to live a healthy lifestyle – with vegetables and especially regular aerobic and ocasional high intensity exercise, which improves your overall ability to resist all manner of stresses and negative onslaughts like infections.

I am dissappointed that such poor quality medical information is still being peddled and published on Youtube in the year 2021, by people who should know much better.

  4. I get sensations in my head, and in the back of my neck and head sounds like electric waves , I know my vitamin D is low I’m forgetful , words don’t come out right

    • I’ve had that while recovering from a traumatic brain injury and serious neurosurgery. My hearing has also been really sensitive and noises that would be close to silent during normal times seemed loud, I also feel pressure in my ears, as if my eustachian tube fills with air and gets blocked the more noise I hear or if I get stressed or annoyed. It was diagnosed by ENT specialists and neurologists as Hyperacusis and it was triggered by anxiety and fatigue that I didn’t recognise I had until I was helped a lot by a psychologist and other brain injuries therapists. I’ve had that along with the tinnitus I already suspected I had for years. Adapting my diet and learning how to recognise and control anxiety and fatigue has helped me almost eliminate those symptoms. I also struggled to pronounce a lot of words and sometimes a completely different word with a different meaning that sounded a bit like the word I was trying to say would come out.

    • @Troy Mylius I agree; part of my symptoms have been similar and increasing all meat, including red meat but also eliminating grains from my diet because wheat was definitely triggering my symptoms to get worse. I’ll have to experiment a bit and try eating more red meat and reducing white meat a bit on those days to see if it makes any difference.

  5. I’m sure I heard on MSM vitamins are an expensive waste of urinary function. Now everyone should buy them? Jokeposterous!

  6. I was able to get rid of my herpes virus permanently with the help of herbal medication from an African herbalist on YouTube called Dr okosun, thank you Dr okosun for giving me a second chance to live happily❤

  7. How can 2 doctors I respect so much miss the mark so drastically. Mark always wants to supplement B vitamins when they’re abundant in animals and the brain and body thrive on saturated fats and cholesterol but he constantly pushes vegetables which are a good supplement but shouldn’t make up more than 10-20% of the diet. I get it that he’s staked his claim on this faulty info and has a lot of money riding on it but he’s either ignoring the science or not keeping up with it which means him and his patients will be left in the dust soon.

    • Go to his website and there you will find the doctors that are accepting new patients. It gives you a list of things you need to do prior to the visit. Couldn’t be any easier. Good luck!
