Hey Weird ad before your video, EEK ! Anyway I just thought I’d let you know I’m still watching your videos, even though I don’t comment on every one, they are still in the Best on the web from someone who really likes/enjoys yoga.
I would just like to mention I’ve meditated for Years (Years) and I even add a couple of yoga poses about 15 years ago. But, until I started a full Routine of Yoga… I do the breathing/everything about 5 years ago, I never really felt all the benefits of Meditation
etc.
In Mysore style you will be will stopped at a stage, till you”master” that asana. This teaching style, developed in an elementary school setting in India, is criticized by Pattabhi Jois’s son, Manju. in an interview:
“A teacher that is stopping you is a bad teacher. The teacher has to encourage the students, give them another posture to try. “
I usually practice at home after i wake up, because school start at 8.20 AM. So I don’t have time to go to an yoga studio, is that ok? Because thats not the traditional mysore style, when you practice in a yoga studio whit your teacher etc.
So is mysore better for the student than a lead class or practicing at home alone? What if the only teacher around is a bad one?
i really need your email addres. i would like to send you a song, or two?
LOL JOJOE
Hi Kino,
I’ve been deeply inspired by ashtanga yoga and instructions provided by yourself and Tim and other fantastic instructors. I’ve picked up a mat and I’ve plunged myself into the practice. But I’m constantly disheartened because there are no ashtanga yoga instructors in my area, so I can never get professional criticisms. I’m going to continue my own modified version for as long as I can, but should I be worried that I won’t be gaining professional instruction?
I had a similar plan when I started a Mysore-style practice. I told myself to give it 3 months. Three months of really committing to it, and being open to whatever I was taught. (I even made myself give up my other, favorite, vinyasa classes during that time.)
I’m hooked! I’ll be sticking with it for a while…
Do you really think the latter would work? I was already seriously considering shouting out to any aspiring ashtangis to group together and form our own practice. But then again, we would be a group of students helping each other but with no teacher.
Great video! I have been curious about mysore for so long, but sadly, there aren’t any studios offering mysore close enough to my home to make it feasible. Maybe someday a studio near me will offer mysore… until then, I will stick to my first love, power yoga.
Kino, what do you think is the best amount of time to practice before going to Mysore to get the maximum benefit? I was thinking you should have at least a regular half-series home practice for 6 months before, but I really don’t know. I have the same problem as many other students on here in that I can only go to Ashtanga classes every few months since the nearest Ashtanga studio is hours away…. I know I want to study in India though, so I am trying to plan for the best time. Thanks! 🙂
Thank you very much Kino. I am hoping to make the journey next year. 🙂
Can you elaborate on what exactly Mysore style is?
Hello
I practice at home!! Totally easy, the postures aren’t difficult.
Hi Kino! I’ve been practicing MySore ashtanga at a school near me for a whole month now, 5x a week and I LOVE it. Only 3/4 thru Primary and a few poses left but the thing I’ve struggled with towards the end of the month was my left hamstring. It probably got pulled while a teacher was helping me with my deep forward bend. I’ve been doing icing and compression. Is this a common problem in Ashtanga and how would you recommend I deal with this? At this rate, it’s getting in the way of my practice!
The mysore style is so inspiring..I’m so glad my friend introduced me to such practice. Planning a mysore trip soon! And I’m so excited to meet you at omkar later this month! 🙂
Thanks so much! I started Mysore and I am addicted. I am currently doing my 200 hr TT and I think everyone thinking of teaching Ashtanga or Vinyassa should have exposer to Mysore since it is so foundational. Thank-you thank-you
Taking the plunge in! Still nervous, but what’s to be gained by not trying?
Great attitude! Keep practicing 🙂
I started today. I am hooked.:)
