It’s not that Orwell knew how it would be today, rather, there were many more authentically intelligent people who had good foresight to take what was going on in society with the advancements in technology etc in their time frame, and they were able to think more than 8 seconds about it _(goldfish have an 8 second attention span)_ and run a thought exercise in their mind how the future would end up if such certain people had control of society and what they would most likely do with such technology in their agenda to control all of society. Today many have been deliberately been made to be so intellectually stupid and have such short attention spans, that they do not realize of course that the rulers have taken parts of Orwell’s magnus opus and incorporated it into their top down panopticon control of society. So it may seem Orwell knew what it would be like today, but he didn’t, rather, because of the environment he grew up in where he became a Socialist and then became disillusioned with Socialism once the reality of the horrors started to be more well known, he wrote NEF as a very huge thought exercise of what could very well happen in rough terms if those same Communist/Socialist ideologies clenched the reigns of control and power in the future and with the technology already in his time that was being invented, it wasn’t a far stretch to envision how that more developed technology in the future would be used in a variety of ways by Communist/Socialist dictatorial leaders to produce a malleable, fear-stricken, incurious, apathetic, submissive, sheepish, very dulled down dimwitted, obedient, intellectually paralyzed, sycophantic, easy to govern society where it’s members have been mind-controlled to lose all sense of individuality/singularity and thus they all are mindcontrlled to engage in ‘group-think’ like a school of fish. If one has indeed read the book, they should have read the preface and introduction in the better version of the book where it explains how Orwell had good foresight due to his own past experiences of being a member of such a civil society to see how things would roughly end up in the future if such Communist/Socialist ideologies obtained access to such further developed technologies. Therefore it wasn’t that hard for Orwell to foresee a future where such technologies of his time which would be further refined and developed in the future, could be used by the Communist/Socialist controllers of the same future time frame, to obtain pan-control of the public mind in all ways.
