Are we eating too much (or not enough) protein for good health?

These days, we hear a lot about carbs versus fats. But what about protein? It’s become the forgotten macronutrient. The diet-wars have been tough on protein, as strict vegans and believers in Paleo strongly disagree on the best forms of it to consume. But protein plays an essential role in good health. So despite the emotional response it elicits in many, it’s about time we pay it more attention. Protein is responsible for the growth and maintenance of new tissue (the building blocks for a strong body!) and makes up certain hormones that act as messengers, as well as the enzymes that we need for metabolic reactions.

Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talk with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon about the importance of protein and why we should shift our dietary focus. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is an integrative physician who completed her fellowship in Nutritional Sciences and Geriatrics at Washington University, St. Louis. She is board-certified in Family Medicine and completed her undergraduate work in Human Nutrition Vitamin and Mineral Metabolism. Dr. Lyon works closely with current and retired Special Operations military operators as a part of the Task Force Dagger Foundation.

  1. Feed lot cattle are fed a diet of round up soaked corn and soy. Get rid of those poison corn and soy fields and plant grass. Put the cattle on the grass fields. That will also cut down on killing our soil with round up.

    • @shel thomas Tell me what about grass fed beef?? So people over 60 cant lift weights, so how do they get there protein??? So confusing

    • @rosalie fabiano Maybe I missed something; I’m not sure where you see ” people over 60 can’t lift weights” as I didn’t hear that in this video nor did I say that. I don’t believe that is true as I am 52 , just ran 2 miles, then worked my back and biceps. I plan to continue well past 60. If you haven’t experienced Grass Fed Beef yet, you really should do that for yourself; the tastes is SO much better. I will attempt to attach a video that “I” think explains the basics of it pretty well. What I believe is so much better about Grass fed ( besides the health and taste benefits ) is the it is better for the planet. Did you know many other countries will not accept the corn, soy, wheat, and other products grown in the US due to the poison Roundup? Conventional farming uses huge amounts of roundup. Roundup was originally patented as an antibiotic. It kills the good/needed bacteria in the soil; as well as the gut of anything / anyone who ingests it. Not to mention it has been proven it causes cancer. By killing the bacteria in the soil anything planted in the soil doesn’t contain the good minerals/ nutrients the plants ( and we ) need in order to be healthy. If you have good “live” soil, plants ( such as grass ) grown in that soil will uptake and organifi the minerals from the soil. When the grazing animal ( cattle , Bison, ..) eat the nutrient dense forage the animal is healthier. A healthier animal with the correct ratio of macros is healthier for us to consume. Now, if you choose not to eat animal that is fine, You do You. You make the choice that is right for you. However, the same principle applies to plants, the healthier the soil the healthier the plant, the healthier the person who consumes it. Your gut needs healthy bacteria to digest your food, and “run” your body. The gut – brain axis is a vital part of our overall health. Roundup causes leaky-gut and cancer in humans and is a huge issue. I am sorry if this is a long answer; keep in mind, I am not a doctor. I am someone who just wants to live a healthy life; eating well and working out. Here is the link to the video ( I hope it helps) have a blessed day! https://youtu.be/EWxYhaaColY

  2. Very informative, a good topic i was so confused about how much protein as we age as well as muscle growth and loss, you have made it clear. Thank you Dr. Hyman and guest Dr.Lyon

    • I stopped watching him for a while because of his and in one case a guest of his… So far in one political direction! The guest made some assumptions that ‘Everyone agreed with’ such and such… I got fed when Dr. Mark did not straightened out the far left assumption and degradation of our President. I would not have made such comments about a President that I didn’t support. Just too one sided. Did enjoy this interview!

  3. Protein is not the problem. Animals being raised for food being treated so cruelly and inhumanely is the problem.

  4. Thanks for this vid. I’m 72 and was starting to doubt if my 3-day-a-week strength training regime was really beneficial. It seems it is, as well as essential to good health and longevity. Thanks again Dr. Hyman. I’m a big fan.

  5. Excellent interview. Best line of all: we are getting a lot of propaganda these days, not a lot of science. Thank you for this.

  6. I feel there is an agenda to push confusion to then cause people to just eat whatever by default which = buying the products being pushed and then relying on Big Pharma to fix the issues caused by crap nutrition.
    Guess what? It’s working…

  7. I understand the concern about meat consumption and greenhouse gases, but that’s a CONFLATION LOGICAL FALLACY — eating animal protein does NOT cause excessive greenhouse gases, poor animal production practices do! Two related, but separate issues!

  8. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview! Great guest! Thank you so much. I’m greatly appreciate of your teaching us and sharing the truth.

  9. Great guest,Dr Lyon, great intellectual interviews. Very clear to the point where you see the common denominator. Thank you Dr Hyman for bringing new light with honesty and bravery to the most controversial subject “health” great day to both of you from your supporter from Palau.

  10. I have been reading The Zone by Barry Sears (published 1995) and this is in agreement with these calculations. Thanks, I was asking this question today.
