This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones from Cleveland Clinic to talk about the health disparities that get passed down through generations and ways to create a new multi-cultural dynamic in healthcare.
Dr. Charles Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Executive Director of Minority Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Physician Lead for Public Health. He founded and directs Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center (MMHC) and in 2003 established Cleveland Clinic’s Annual Minority Men’s Health Fair.
Dr. Leonor Osorio has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital practicing Internal medicine since 2001. She was instrumental in the opening of the Lutheran Hospital Hispanic Clinic, which connects patients to Spanish speaking physicians.
Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic. For 19 years, she has served as a well-respected leader, managing patient concentric care initiatives. She leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine.
Thats a clever group of people who just want some simple respect. Just like the Hispanics I dont want an aloof doctor who doesnt think I am worth making eye contact with.
Lots of Latinos grew up eating homemade food. I did. How ever as an adult I became very busy and relied on fast food. My health got really bad. I had so many symptoms and was on a few medications. 7.5 years ago I read books by drs who promote the vegan or plant-based lifestyle. Then I changed my lifestyle. It was not easy but I am glad I did it. My health has improved a great deal plus I lost 70 lbs.
The food system and the medical system doesn’t care about any of us. Obesity and chronic illness is effecting all of us. These issues should be discussed outside of the lens of identity politics. A united population can effect change much easier than a divided one.
A doctor who doesn’t make eye contact has nothing to do with just the Hispanic community not coming back. I know that in my group of friends of various nationalities/US citizens, we have all left doctors who talk into their microphones away from us. I am fortunate to have found a Hispanic doctor so this is no longer a problem. I just love my doctor. He is great. 🙂
“If you’re a diabetic you’re going to b on 5 or 6 meds already” WHAT? maybe there r ppl that r on more than one med for diabetes but this sounds exaggerated like patients won’t come back if the drs exam room can’t b overrun w/ a patients entire family. I agree if u don’t look at the patient they probably will feel the dr might not care. However, I don’t think patients have a right to crowd a drs exam room either. Who and why does anybody need to have tons of family w/ them. This is the second video that Mark put up today and both r full of crazy. What is he trying to accomplish?
