Takeaways:
Is lactose intolerance causing your gut issues
Why dairy can be the cause of underlying health issues
Most of us grew up hearing that dairy, and especially milk, is crucial for good health. In reality, dairy isn’t the vital source of calcium and strong bones that we were led to believe. Dairy can cause digestive problems for the majority of people with lactose intolerance, along with a range of other symptoms in people with and without lactose intolerance. These symptoms can include sinus issues, skin issues, headaches, autoimmune issues, and more. So how do you know if the lactose in dairy, or dairy overall, is a problem for you?
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss lactose intolerance and the myriad of ways dairy can cause digestive problems, and more. They also share how they work with patients to determine how dairy is being tolerated, and if it is the cause of other underlying health issues.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

I haven’t eaten dairy for 30 years now I eat low fat quark with coconut milk mixed in and feel better
I hope that your channel can have subtitles in Portuguese, so much more persons can access so valuable knowledge.
Many herbivores eat bones, and obviously omnivores and carnivores do too, so I think we need to find ways to incorporate bones in our diet if you can’t have dairy. There are bone supplements that are just ground up bones.
I’d love to know your thoughts on raw milk and raw milk products like yogurt, kefir, etc? I do believe the benefits of raw grassmilk is amazing and we feel way different on that than the pasteurized junk from the store
@James Folsom My sister & her new husband were Dairy farming in WI & they had raw milk and swore by it for good health.
This was before the GMO CRAP – seriously, why hasn’t Monsanto been banned?
@Violett Fem seriously we need to take action the biggest threat in our lifetime, our food… I hope it all burns to acrisp and Monsanto gets destroyed..they are the devil…..
@Kyriaki Dominguez we need to ask why Bill Gates is buying up so much farmland too… they’re killing us
Gates will probably ration food across the globe. Cause shortages here
@mtgela No doubt . . he’s apparently building his own Nuclear Plant too.
This is creeping me out!
I have a touch of whole grass fed milk in my coffee just about every morning and the other time that I have milk is a touchup with whole-grain cereal and coconut milk I had about 90% of the entire liquid content. For the most part I don’t think that I’m suffering from lactose intolerance. No problems with whole fat yogurt or any other whole fat dairy products.
Too bad the interviewer doesn’t let the guest speak. Mark you’ve got to stop promoting your books and talking so much when you interview people. Just have your own podcast so you can talk for the whole time. But if you are interviewing someone, please let them talk.
Please take note. Mark
My comment was erased…ofcourse
I had mentioned how customer and employees looked incredible on A2 raw farm…people in their 60’s looking 40. Strong ,healthy, vibrant, sharp, witty, all on raw milk their whole life’s. Skin like a babies bottom.
No cure for narcissism unfortunately.
I wonder how long these populations who rarely consume dairy breastfeed for. I bet it’s longer than the ones who do drink milk.
but how i’m gonna drink my coffee without my cream?! i’m already mixing it half-half with coconut cream. but i don’t feel anything bad after drinking milk or my coffee, so it shouldn’t be an issue?
I think title should say pasteurized dairy destroys gut
Isn’t milk harmful to only those who are sensitive or allergic to it?
Is it possible we’re not tolerant to milk because of possible gluten intolerance. Because of the cow is eating grain. That lectin protein would show up in the milk. We all know how evil the lectin protein is. Just a thought something else 2 contemplate. I drink raw pasteurized milk at this point in my life, the probiotics I take now have really helped my stomach or as it’s referred to now gut health. I grew up on goat’s milk! I would develop an upset stomach if I drink cow’s milk. But now Since I’ve been taking variety of probiotics. I can consume large quantities of milk and it does not do anything to my stomach anymore.
No one should consume low fat anyting it’s too over-processed.
Which probiotics helped you? Need to heal my gut.
I’ve heard that some people who were thought to be lactose intolerant are fine with drinking A2 milk. In those instances, they are lectin intolerant, rather than lactose intolerant.
I wish more clean dairy was readily available. I have a hard time finding it where I live now, and it is often inhibitorily expensive when I do find it.
Cheese, yogurt, sour cream etc is a huge part of what keeps me going on a low carb lifestyle. If I had to give dairy up, it would cut out many of the dishes I prepare, or make them totally uninteresting as a meal.
if you have an aged cheese like gouda or parmesean, there’s no lactose left in it
What is the main substance that the protective layer in our brain is made of. Cholesterol. And cholesterol is one of the few things our body produces. So why would you want to be on a cholesterol free diet which would just enhance brain deterioration
Bottom line is we’re all gonna die sometime. In the meantime eat and drink sensibly what you enjoy best and that for me is dairy. Life wouldn’t be worth much without a good helping of cow’s milk on my cereal and what about the myriad choice of cheeses..Yummy.
BTW…that’s been an essential part of my diet for over sixty years..and feeling better than ever.
I don’t think there’s a benefit to avoiding milk when you aren’t sensitive to it.
Kids are less likely to have lactose intolerance because they are always outside and their vitamin D levels are higher. As you get older, you stay indoors more often resulting in an intolerance. Take high amounts of vitamin D to digest it better if you dont want to avoid it.
Alternitive milks are diverse and delicious!
I eat dairy, I feel fine.
Great video about diary and how people get sensitive! Acne and dairy is a huge motivation to stop. I heard this was a thing 20 years ago but great to hear the reinforcement and it’s being talked about much more with new research. Thank you for the video!!
