We are living in an age of anxiety; and we know that stress wreaks havoc on our health in so many ways, physiologically, emotionally, and mentally. For many people of all ages, stress can lead to anxiety and debilitating panic attacks. While conventional medicine typically treats anxiety and panic attacks as a diagnosis, Functional Medicine views anxiety and panic attacks as symptoms and seeks to get to the root cause underlying these issues.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating panic attacks. They explore the range of physiological considerations they explore when treating patients who are experiencing panic attacks, as well as how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma can be treated to reduce anxiety and eliminate panic attacks.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

@lala ebrahimThank you for sharing. Respect as well!
@lala ebrahim Yes. Christian Bible reading is the cure.
Thank you very much for demystifying anxiety and getting to the root causes. It would be interesting to also mention the use of bodily therapies for trauma release such as dance/movement therapy. -Lena
Until the root cause of much of disease is addressed, environmental toxicity, bandaids are all any medicine is. Why not address what is making so many people sick???Drs in other countries are doing so!!! Toxins in our water, soil, air, and food that is why anxiety is rampant. Cleaning up the environment is the place to start, yet the world can’t profit from prevention so people are just going to get sicker and who profits the medical world? If you have metal poisoning CBD can make you psychotic!!!
Beef has the most essential nutrients. 22:00 these guys push vegetarian and will always have sick patients with vegetarian IBS from lectins.
Yep, lectins, oxalates, histamines, groitagens etc etc. plants are poison.
Im a meat lover
I have panic attacks. And Extreme depersonalization. I can’t leave my house cuz of them and been on benzos for decades but workout 6 days a week. I’m a vegan. Eat super healthy. I take good care of myself.
The benzos are creating your anxiety and panic attacks, get off the benzos asap!! But do it very carefully and slowly!! But whatever you do, get off the drugs!!!
That is so, so not true about benzos. Many people cannot tolerate them, sure, but they saved my life. I had such horrible attacks I was going to kiss everything goodbye. I finally found a research study at a well-renowned medical university. They were studying mitral valve prolapse, which I did not have, but they checked other causes, such as sodium lactate. I was also in a blind study, and found an infusion of sodium lactate put me in a full-blown attack. Maybe that was all of it or not. Please consult an expert if you get attacks. As I said, all of this saved my life.
I, too, have an extremely healthy diet/lifestyle, so Holly, please do some research about this.
Anxiety, 1.0: “Anxiety is an emotion; it’s not a disease. It’s an essential part of your intelligence, and it brings you unique skills that are irreplaceable.”
~ Karla McLaren
Anxiety, 2.0: “When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety; if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain. From this I understand that what I want also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me. There is a great secret here for anyone who can grasp it.”
