The Science of Preventing (and Reversing) Dementia

For so long, we’ve been told that memory loss and dementia are just a normal part of aging. Though we now know it doesn’t have to be that way, and that there are many measures we can proactively take to avoid cognitive decline with aging, there are still 6 million people in the US who have Alzheimer’s or pre-Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to rise to 15 million by 2060. But emerging research is helping us look at new ways to treat and even prevent devastating diseases like this, giving people a newfound sense of hope. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, has spent the majority of his life pioneering this field. From the age of 8, he knew he wanted to be a doctor, and just ten years later at 18, he began researching Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Sabbagh is a board-certified neurologist and considered one of the leading experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia. He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and BMC Neurology and is now editor in chief of Neurology and Therapy and is the author of The Alzheimer’s Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy, and The Alzheimer’s Prevention Cookbook: 100 Recipes to Boost Brain Health. Dr. Sabbagh’s latest book, Fighting for My Life: How to Thrive in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s, was just released.

  1. So why have you not read Dr Dale Bredesen’s book before the interview? Published in 2017, it describes all the interventions mentioned. Title, The End of Alzheimer’s.

  2. It’s well said, treat for achieving health, not to clear diseases. And first thing can be brought into today’s system is use common sense of health care providers, communicating with the patient/customer for relevant info they can provide which can give an insight. But we are so eagerly awaiting the battery of tests n reports, artificial intelligence only is used more. This type of an approach not only costs an astronomical expense in tests n treatment but simple important n obvious signs n symptoms are overlooked for want of that B 12, B6, Iron, Calcium etc in thr serum. Initial years of medical education is concentrated on signs n symptoms of those deficiencies

  3. “One of the biggest triggers for heart disease is gum disease”. And what triggers gum disease? Sugar and carbohydrates.

Low insulin = low inflammation. You guys are finally catching up.

  4. Ketones are preferentially used by the brain even in the presents of glucose. Stephen Cunnane demonstrated this on multiple occasions.

  5. By the time you are pre-symptomatic the damage is already done. It’s like pre-diabetes. You are already insulin resistant with beta cell fatigue.

  6. It is my opinion that the Alzheimer’s dementia and Parkinson’s numbers are all Rising because of cholesterol lowering drugs. First we said cholesterol-lowering drugs were only supposed to be used for a short time but I know several people who have been on them for over 25 years. Cholesterol lowering drugs DO stop the production of cholesterol but it also stops the production of cholesterol that feeds your brain. Your brain needs cholesterol to live. Over the years we have slowly increased the number of patients on these drugs, the length of time people are on them, and the amount given to patients. It also seems to me that everyone who is between 45 and 50 years old whether they have high cholesterol or not are given these drugs. The timeline in the correlation just seems very suspicious to me.

  7. Dr. Mary Newport has been investigating ketones since 2008 She used coconut oil /MCT Oil and ketones to improve the quality of life for her husband, Steve. Is this intervention valid as a low-cost protocol?

  8. Dear Dr Hyman I bought your book eat fat get thin wondering is it okay to drink whole milk or is that too high in fat?
