Treating Adult Acne & Rosacea From The Inside Out

Our skin is a reflection of what’s going on with our health beneath the surface; skin problems often signals that something is off in our body. Acne rosacea is an inflammatory condition that affects about 10% of adults. While conventional medicine typically treats acne rosacea by prescribing lotions and potions, Functional Medicine seeks to get at the problem’s root cause. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to talk about common drivers of acne rosacea, why it is frequently related to gut health, and how they treat patients with this condition.

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

  1. Please help ! I can’t live with Rosacea ! How can I cure it ? I can’t afford treatment with a Functional Medicine physician

  2. So I’ve been eating clean for a year. I still have redness and inflammation in my face and cheeks. No sugar, just water, plant based sweeteners and lean proteins and veggies at all meals. What am I missing? How can I improve my gut health?

    • I got rid of awful adult-onset eczema and blepharitis by eliminating several things: sugar, wheat, soy, dairy, coffee, grains, beans, fruits, and even vegetables. Yes, it’s very restrictive, but you can later try reintroducing items one at a time. I now eat a mostly carnivore diet, but can tolerate some veggies and rice. It’s absolutely free to try…you only need some discipline for a few weeks. My skin is back to normal after that wretched itching! Good luck whatever you decide.

    • Any kind of sweetener can cause inflammation for some. Might want to try eliminating all of them. Bone broth is helpful in restoring gut health, but it’s important that you narrow down any inflammatory triggers. Be aware of your blood sugar levels too, along with stress, hormonal imbalances. There are other triggers such as mold contamination, heavy metal toxicity, and parasites. The list is endless when it comes to gut health and inflammation. I find its helpful to follow functional med and naturopath doctors on instagram. There’s so much helpful and free info on there.

    • you need to reduce your lean protain (meat) at every meal… meat only twice a week – even better replace your meat with fish. No plant based sweeteners – that’s a complete no-no! I think you eat more than just veggies and meat at your meals though…

    • @n elle I have lost 70 pounds this year and did it by switching to lean meats and veggies at each meal. Clean eating. I do allow some cheese a few times a week, which I should definitely avoid I’m sure. I use stevia in my coffee with nut pods but I may have a food allergy test to see if anything pops up.

  3. I am really looking forward to listening in! I have type 1 and 2 (acne rosacea) that I manage naturally. I was told by a dermatologist to take oral antibiotics for 3 months, topical antibiotics on my face and that’s not all, the birth control too (I’m 43!). I laughed and said no thank you. I’ve been managing it with red light therapy, natural health supplements, the right natural face care, good nutrition, and managing stress with meditation and exercise. My biggest triggers are sugar, chocolate, really cold windy weather and stress. The one thing I’ve learned in my journey the last 4 years of dealing with this is that no two cases are alike and what works for me, might not work for someone else.
