Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (or fatty liver, for short) affects 90 million Americans and is a major cause of chronic disease and inflammation in the body. This inflammation creates insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, which causes your body to deposit fat not just in your liver but also all around your organs and in your belly. So what is driving fatty liver and the whole cascade of issues it causes? And how do you fix it?
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Shawn Stevenson and Dr. Shebani Sethi Dalai about the various mechanisms that are at work when our bodies process food. They also discuss how non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise in our country due to the overconsumption of sugar, starch, and ultra-processed food.

Yep I tell my family and customers to cut the sugars and carbs
They don’t listen.
“Dr” Sebi said decades ago, Inflammation is the only (dis-ease), every (itis) related to inflammation.
Most doctors will never tell you this information.
Most doctors don’t even know this basic information.
Tequila is great! LoL
Outlaw HFCS
20 years ago I taught a self help class on fibromyalgia and Myfacial pain syndrome. The hypothalamus gland is the transmission in your body. Cut out the sugar, drink water, Walk and sleep
All the foods that have appeared since the 70s when we started buying cakes instead of making them buying ready made food that made cooking dinner a lot more convenient also when schools stopped cookery classes all this needs to be reversed slowly before the NHS bankrupts the country!!!!
Great information! Thank you!!
Great podcast but somehow I had to watch this at 1.5 speed. The second guest especially spoke in an incredibly slowly cadence.
Was listening to a YT vid by Ivor Cummins and he mentioned NAFL that if stop eating snacks of chips fried in high omega 6 oils and eating processed sugars can greatly reduce. Also mentioned a lab rarely done by Dr’s, GGT can show if liver is “tired”. He also mentioned skinny fat people (guess have NAFLD but are skinny) where can only see the fat around the organs (visceral?) on a scan (maybe a special dexa?).
Sounds like finding good food replacements for bad foods would be most helpful!!
I just saw a video on Professor Robert Lustig and he said the root problem is sugar just like you!
Starch per se doesn’t cause fatty liver.
It’s the fructose…
Dr. MT Morter, Jr, DC taught that unresolved trauma also interferes with function of the hypothalamus.
How can I stop my stinging, painful nightly itching?
You’ve planted a seed of hope.
DR Hyman, I came across your videos. I’m in the Dallas TX. Do you know of a medical practice you’d recommend? There are so many of them that I don’t have the energy or support to do some research. I’ve had severe chronic fatigue since 2017, I also had open heart surgery in 2018. I’ve been to many doctors and I’m told that they don’t know what more they can do. I watched the video of How I Treated my chronic Fatigue and Heal autoimmune disease with DR. Cynthia Li with functional medicine
Nature made fruits too but I’m not sure if all that fructose is good either.
