Who Should Eat Keto and Why?

Chances are, you’ve heard a lot of buzz about the ketogenic (or keto) diet. This high-fat, low-carb approach to eating has become extremely popular in recent years for helping with everything from weight loss to cognition. So is it worth the hype? Like any diet, keto is great for some people and not-so-great for others. Genetics, family history, personal health goals, and so many other factors tie into what type of diet will work for an individual. The one-size-fits-all approach to diet has led way too many people down the wrong path.⁣
⁣
Today, I’m excited to chat with Gary Taubes all about the keto diet, it’s complexities and benefits, and who might want to consider it. Gary is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative. He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and numerous "best of" anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, and is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research.⁣

  1. I just got the book for my birthday last week and just started reading it. It has a nice bright yellow cover in the UK. Really enjoying it so far.

  2. I have read this book”THE CASE FOR KETO” once and I am into it’s second reading. Every one should read it.It can prove to be the most life changing book. The book is beyond excellent.

  3. Great content…..
Question, would the reason why some people can’t tolerate certain foods be because of their BLOOD TYPE ?

  4. I guess I am an oddball, but, I have Hashimoto’s and I am underweight. I used to be overweight. I cut back on sugar, dairy and gluten a couple of years ago. Now my dr. wants me to GAIN weight! I’m so confused about what I should eat!

  5. Totally agree, what you eat is how you feel! I’ve been feeling the best in my life since being on keto/ carnivore. No more depression, no mood swing, no more explosion hahaha. And most importantly not angry when I feel hungry.

  6. I love how Gary thinks hunting a buffalo was super easy. Yeah they were plentiful but they still had to be brought down by a bow and arrow…

  7. This conversation really needs to be tied into a conversation about fasting. For many/most people, de novo lipogenesis occurs because, well – the body has stored insulin everywhere it can – the liver, pancreas, other organs, muscle tissue, etc – it’s trying to protect itself from all that energy it can’t just keep circulating. So, if you want to burn that subcutaneous fat, the answer for you might just to think bass-ackwards: get your insulin low with keto, cycle into some prolonged fasting, and your body – brilliant as it is – will tap into all that cruddy organ fat/growth, visceral / intramuscular fat, and by the time you’re really starting to take away all that subcutaneous body fat – you’re already worlds healthier. (My study of one – I’m 6’4″ and was back up to at least 340 by Thanksgiving 2020. Right now I’m in the low 260’s with 1-3 day fasts in the middle of every work week. And I still drink (just 2 days per week instead of 8, lol). And No I am not a doctor – just keep listening to smart people like Drs Mark and Gary. (I’d add Peter Attia, Jason Fung, and more)

  8. I think that once your insulin responses are normalized and you’ve reversed most of your excess fat issues, you’ll STILL want to have some periods of higher insulin and growth (paired with lots of low-insulin days), if just to retain lean mass into your later decades. But I don’t know anything more than what I’ve been reading….

  9. Good podcast and it’s great info. I’ve gotten great results living the keto lifestyle. I try to help my friends with it as they can see the results in my life but because getting off carbs is very difficult for most people , they struggle then give up. I wish more people will stop the dogma that this diet is better then that diet etc. Keto is a lifestyle and if it’s done correctly , your tastes change , you get healthy and I think you’ll love feeling great everyday!
