Insulin resistance is one of the most undiagnosed problems affecting Americans. Dr. Shabani Sethi Dalai joins me on The Doctor’s Farmacy to discuss the importance of testing for insulin resistance, what tests to request from your doctor, and much more.
Dr. Sethi Dalai and I discuss metabolic psychiatry, a term she coined, which looks at the connection between psychiatry and overall metabolic health. Metabolic psychiatry considers how nutrition affects the brain, specifically focusing on reducing sugar, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates as a mechanism to improve mind and body health. Dr. Sethi Dalai discusses how highly refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods can alter brain signaling, appetite-satiety mechanisms, and reward signaling, and how the use of a ketogenic diet can be an effective intervention to address mental illness, including binge eating and food addiction.
Dr Hyman, you are a smart man. My blood sugars are running 150-183 after waking up from sleep. Toes and fingers tingling, never had that before. Don’t know my A1C but Insulin Resistence is a big problem with me. Will have my doctor do a Fasting Insulin. Thanks
You should revise your diet and dramatically cut the carbs. Fasting blood sugar should be max 100. You are on the way to diabetes. Reverse the track!! God luck and stay strong

HOMA – IR
How many hundreds of millions of people in the US are we talking about?
So what is the name of the test ?
When we ask our doctors to test for things, they look at us like we are stupid. They don’t want to justify testing to insurance companies.
Absolutely! I always ask my primary care doc for fasting insulin!
I have a question, who should have a fasting insulin level?
