The impact the gut has on the entire body should not be underestimated, but unfortunately in conventional medicine it often is. We are shuttling pounds and pounds of food into this tube we have called the digestive system several times a day and we don’t give it a second thought—it’s pretty crazy when you think about it. The gut is responsible for our ability to turn food into fuel; to absorb and even create certain nutrients; to rid the body of harmful toxins on a daily basis. We rely on it to do so much for us.
It’s also one of my favorite topics as a Functional Medicine doctor—poop, the microbiome, the gut-immune and gut-brain connections—there are so many angles we need to look at with gut health and they can tell us an amazing amount of information about the rest of the body. That’s why I’m so excited for this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, where I sit down with my friend and colleague Dr. Todd LePine to take a deeper look at digestive health and the fascinating collection of life forms we carry around inside and on us, called the microbiome.
This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv and Thrive Market.
Recently I shared with you that I’m really excited to be working out with a trainer. And while I’m loving these new workouts, I am not always loving feeling sore the next day. That’s why I’m so excited about a new tool I found that helps me recover faster, it’s a red light therapy device called Joovv. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin and cells. It helps your body produce more cellular energy and reduce oxidative stress, which helps tired and damaged muscle tissue repair and regenerate faster. To check out the Joovv products for yourself head over to joovv.com/farmacy. Once you’re there, you’ll see a special bonus the Joovv team is giving away to my listeners. Use the code FARMACY at checkout. Make sure to also check out Joovv's website for some special holiday deals while supplies last!

How often should you take probiotics and prebiotic? Long term daily ?
most probiotics don’t colonize in the gut. The best chance of a probiotic that can colonize is a spore based probiotic. The other types die in stomach acid usually.
Supplementation usually 1-3 months probiotic. Pre biotic daily with probiotic. But aim to eat real foods that have pre biotics in them. If supplementing pre biotic, whole food based is best.
Eat live yogurt and make your own kimchi and sauerkraut and eat a bit daily.
@Pablo Insano Dont do this if you have a Histamine intolerance, Take probiotic pills if you do
Way Too Sleepy: Almost all probiotic pills also have bacteria that produce histamine.
Imagine how healthy we would all be if our Drs healed our gut instead of giving us medicine. I’ve been keto for two years now. We eat one meal a day at 2pm every single day. No other food before or after that. I have so many questions!
Why don’t more insurance plans reimburse for functional medicine?
Great discussion, doctors! Thank you for covering a lot of ground!!
Your thoughts on Medical Medium statement all gut issues from viruses like EBV and streptococcus what sitting in our livers? Thank you
Please do a show on hypertension. I’m intrigued by the age and genetic components of this condition. I’m otherwise healthy, but I’m back on hydrochlorothiazide to lower my blood pressure. Thank you for your expertise and the joy you display in your work!
Wonderful and interesting discussion
Todd is great
I would love to hear you discuss how to get off stimulants medications from a functional medicine POV.
I’ve helped hundreds of people with fmt, fmt is a temporary fix, the xeno microbiota does not stick. Btw correction: fmt is not yet first line treatment for c.diff.
Dr. Hyman, I love your work. When you say your clinic was able to cure something that Mayo was not I believe it reduces your credibility. Cleveland Clinic and Mayo are both highly regarded. Thank you
Love this ! Very informative. Thank you
Remarkable episode
Excellent discussion, thank you so much for posting this
I went gluten-free for 2 1/2 months and noticed no changes whatsoever.
Another excellent program on how to approach wellness via functional medicine.
Great advertisement for the Ultra Wellness Center. Too bad I can’t go the MA. It is sad that functional medicine is not more accessible both from a location standpoint but also insurance coverage.
Your work is so valuable – thank you. I would love to hear a conversation on osteoporosis. I have it and do not want to take the drugs.
As a Moroccan, eat as breakfast a porridge of barley with onion, oregano , rosemary, garlic, cumin, olive oil and miscellaneous seeds (depending on your health condition)
Thank you for putting this out .. I have been suffering for years with auto immune disease
What is the name of the company the guest references that makes the freeze dried poop pills for fmts?
